Bradford Odeon a step closer to becoming new entertainment hub

Bradford Odeon looks set for regeneration and revitalisation. Plans have been announced to reopen the run-down site as an entertainment and conference venue which is hoped will become a vibrant hub in the city.

Bradford Live and Bradford council will bid for funding from a new Government pot which has been set up to use culture to regenerate parts of the North.

There are grants of up to £4 million from the Northern Cultural Regeneration Fund which are to be made available to a small number of transformational projects.

This is part of the legacy of the Great Exhibition of the North which is to be held in Newcastle next summer.

Bradford was on the shortlist to stage this event and are now working very closely with Newcastle who did win the rights to host it.

They are set to stage an exciting satellite programme of creative activity across the district between June and September 2018.

Bradford Live and Bradford Council see the Northern Cultural Regeneration Fund as a golden opportunity to bid for cash that will transform the former Odeon building.

Bradford Council Leader, Councilor Susan Hinchcliffe, spoke of the investment she said: “This is a great opportunity for the Odeon. I think it’s just the kind of project which would provide the Government with a tangible, prominent legacy for their investment.

“We have continued to back Bradford Live’s proposals to transform this landmark building into a live music venue that would greatly add to the strong cultural life of this city.

“This venue would bring in thousands of extra visitors into the city centre each year, adding another vital piece of the jigsaw to Bradford’s regeneration.”

Lee Craven from Bradford Live spoke of their involvement in this process he said: “We are totally committed to bringing this iconic building back into use and ensuring Bradford is back on the touring circuit for major music acts.

“We have a vision that the building could also be used for conferences and other creative uses as it sits in a superb central location. Renovating the Odeon building will complement the adjacent Alhambra Theatre, completing the vista from the multi-award-winning City Park.

“Huge process has already been made and a successful bid to this fund would be another leap forward to achieving that aim.”

The first round of bids for the Northern Cultural Regeneration Fund is being coordinated by Local Enterprise Partnerships including Leeds City Region.

Each Local Enterprise Partnership can nominate just one bid from its region which then goes forward to be judged by Government against all the other bids from other parts of the North.

The International Biopic on the Last King of Punjab, Maharajah Duleep Singh, claims the 9th spot in the UK Box Office Charts

The international film biopic on the poignant life story of the last King of Punjab – Maharajah Duleep Singh – also known as THE BLACK PRINCE, which released theatrically worldwide on the 21st of July 2017, has raked in a cult following and phenomenal response globally, debuting at number 9 in the UK Box charts.

THE BLACK PRINCE entered the coveted Top 10 UK Box Office chart, joining other cinematic hits such as Dunkirk, Despicable Me 3, War for the Planet of the Apes and Spiderman - Homecoming. The film, which features a strong Indian narrative, successfully fended off competition from Bollywood’s Munna Michael, outperforming the box office records internationally including in Australia, United Kingdom, North America and New Zealand.

THE BLACK PRINCE has been appreciated by audiences worldwide, who for the first time witnessed the personal account of one of India’s greatest kings and his lifelong struggle to reclaim his rightful kingdom back from the British, the very people who had brought him to the UK and annexed the Kohinoor Diamond. The film also carefully captures Maharajah Duleep Singh’s fragile relationship with Queen Victoria who was Godmother to his children.

Produced by Brillstein Entertainment (Academy Award winning film 12 Years A Slave), THE BLACK PRINCE is written and directed by Hollywood filmmaker Kavi Raz and filmed widely across the UK and India. Acclaimed singer-poet Satinder Sartaaj marked his acting debut in THE BLACK PRINCE, essaying the character of Maharajah Duleep Singh with eloquence. He is joined by an esteemed cast of acting stalwarts including Jason Flemyng (Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, Snatch) as Dr. Login, the foster parent for the Maharajah, English stage, screen actress Amanda Root (The Iron Lady), who portrays the bold role of Queen Victoria; and veteran actress Shabana Azmi (City of Joy) as Rani Jindan, the exiled King’s mother. The first picture of Vidya Balan from the upcoming film 'Begum Jaan' sees lead actress Vidya immersed into her character. She plays the madam of a brothel and can be seen smoking a hookah sitting on a bed and being served by co-star Gauahar Khan.

Fans can expect a powerful performance from the actress, yet again. 'Begum Jaan' is the Hindi adaptation of National Award-winning filmmaker Srijit Mukherji's Bengali film, 'Rajkahini'.

The film delves into the lives of 11 women living in a brothel that finds itself divided by the newly-chalked line-of-control, with half of the house in India and the other half in Pakistan post-partition.

The film throws the audience back in time, with a cautious yet powerful narration of the events that led to the partition and the aftermath through the eyes of a less fortunate, detested and despised section of the dispersed society.

In a gist, the story attempts to showcase the heart-wrenching yet valorous tale of a sex worker and her associates leading a rebellion against the tyrant government officials and the proposed partition.

Director: Tom McGrath

Cert: U

Release Date: 07/04/2017

DreamWorks Animation and the director of Madagascar invite you to meet a most unusual baby. He wears a suit, speaks with the voice and wit of Alec Baldwin, and stars in the animated comedy, DreamWorks' The Boss Baby.

The Boss Baby is a hilariously universal story about how a new baby's arrival impacts a family, told from the point of view of a delightfully unreliable narrator, a wildly imaginative 7-year-old named Tim.

The most unusual Boss Baby (Alec Baldwin) arrives at Tim's home in a taxi, wearing a suit and carrying a briefcase.

The instant sibling rivalry must soon be put aside when Tim discovers that Boss Baby is actually a spy on a secret mission, and only he can help thwart a dastardly plot that involves an epic battle between puppies and babies.

Bollywood joins forces with Iran to produce their first cinematic experience ‘Salam Mumbai’

MANCHESTER – Sunday 26th February 8pm – VUE Lowry Outlet, Salford, M50 3AG

LONDON - Sunday 5th March, 02 Centre, VUE Finchley Road, NW3 6LU

“Salaam Mumbai is a classic example of art emerging triumphant when it is subverted.”

India and Iran have embarked on a new journey to co-produce a tumultuous love story whilst featuring a confluence of the two countries. Bollywood’s international success has influenced the Iran film Industry to observe and understand the nuances of Indian films.

The venture has been a celebrated success in Iran and has broken box office records. It is currently being previewed throughout the UK.

The film stars one of Bollywood’s leading ladies Dia Mirza who talks about what attracted her to the role: “There are many differences between Bollywood and Iranian Cinema, which made working on this project a truly unique experience for me.

“The way the scenes are staged, the meter of performance is very honest and organic in its approach. While we tend to heighten experiences they choose to underplay them. The censorship guidelines in their cinema push creative expression.

“It is a classic example of art emerging triumphant when it is subverted.”

She is paired opposite Mohammed Reza Gulzar who is considered the Shah Rukh Khan of Iranian cinema.

Other Indian talent includes actress Poonam Dhillon and Gulshan Grover who depicts his ‘bad man’ on screen persona. Award winning Playback singer Arjit Singh has provided his vocals for the movie soundtrack which is being officially released this month.

‘Salam Mumbai’ centres around two medical students from different parts of the world finding love while capturing the rich cinematic legacies of both countries.

The movie has been appreciated by cross-cultural audiences.

At the Birmingham premiere last month one audience member highlighted “Being an avid Bollywood fan this movie is a real family entertainer that comes with all of those rollercoaster emotions, whilst offering some Iranian influence which brings a new art to storytelling.

“I feel positive that this movie has managed to blend two cultures together to provide entertainment, considering today’s times where relationships between some countries are strained due to a lack of cultural awareness.”

Star Cast: Arsh Bajwa, Brijendra Kala, Tapsee Pannu

Director: Amit Roy

Genre: Romance

Release date: 17/02/2017

It tells the story of Ram Bharose (Amit Sadh) and his friend Sarabjeet Sidhaana aka Cyberjeet (Arsh Bajwa), who set up a website to help love struck couples in the city of Amritsar defy their families’ marriage orders and elope together.

Taapsee Pannu, who plays Nimmi, the female lead, says the reason the role appealed to her was because the character is almost similar to her.

She says that although she didn’t have to step too far outside her comfort zone to play Nimmi, she learnt a lot from the experience. "The characters in the film are very real. That’s where the humour comes from – not from funny lines, but from these very real characters that everyone can identify with."

Although the movie is a light-hearted romantic comedy, Pannu concedes that the issues it addresses are a serious matter for many people.

"Arranged marriage is an issue that affects a lot of people in this country," she says. "It sometimes seems like couples have to think about everything except their own feelings when they get married. They have to think about their religion, their caste, their family, society – and the last question seems to be ‘do you actually want to marry this person?’"

Working with the ‘Dada’ of Indian cinema

Cast as the only British actor in an Indo-British co-production, a 21-year-old from the Midlands is set to appear in a feature film starring legendary Naseeruddin Shah.

Antonio Aakeel, from Birmingham has this month wrapped up filming ‘The Hungry’ - adapted from Shakespeare’s Titus Andronicus, a feature film debut from Bornila Chatterjee.

Aakeel who has starred in British TV dramas ‘Skins’, ‘Moving On’ and ‘Doctors’ and films ‘The Line of Freedom’, ‘The Contract’ and ‘City of Tiny Lights’, is thrilled to be working with a talented cast.

“Working with the legendary actor Naseeruddin Shah was a great education for me,” says Aakeel

“But on the first day I was so nervous acting alongside him I actually forgot my first line," he laughingly recollects.

Starring both stars of eastern and western cinema, the film is a joint production from Film London and Cinestaan and showcases the talents of internationally renowned thespian Naseeruddin Shah.

The 65-year-old godfather of Indian cinema has appeared in over 200 films including ‘The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen’ alongside Sean Connery, and ‘Monsoon Wedding’, directed by Mira Nair.

Naseeruddin expressed his excitement: “The film is adapted from one of Shakespeare’s lesser-known plays, Titus Adronicus - is not well known, but it’s brilliant.”

Aakeel, who was “incredibly inspired” to work on the Shakespearean project, celebrating four centuries of the playwright says: “I was so attracted to this character that was darker than anything else I’d ever had the opportunity to approach before.

“Working in India was such an interesting experience too.

“I hadn’t been back for over ten years so this was my first experience as an adult in my motherland and the lifestyle there is completely different.

“The film is every bit of a Shakespearean epic. Themes of Love, greed, loss and are all prevalent in his work (and adaptations) 400 years later; And what a great way to commemorate such a legacy.”

The film also stars Neeraj Kabi, Arjun Gupta, Sayani Gupta, Tisca Chopra and Suraj Sharma and will have a cinematic release on Amazon Prime later this year.

Politics in India cinema: “I’m not here to solve problems” says Shah Rukh Khan

Shah Rukh Khan may be the king of modern Bollywood, but don't ask the superstar to rule on whether Pakistani actors should be allowed to work in Indian cinema.

"You are asking me for solutions to international problems. I don't have a solution for this," Khan said in an interview during promotions for his film ‘Raees’.

In the film, which opens in cinemas next week, the 51-year-old plays the eponymous protagonist, a bootlegger who makes his fortune in the western state of Gujarat.

Despite being a big-ticket release, ‘Raees’ has not had a smooth road to the screen. Escalating tensions between India and Pakistan last year led to protests against Pakistani actors working in India, including Mahira Khan who plays Khan's romantic interest in ‘Raees’.

The Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), a hardline right-wing party threatened to disrupt screenings of movies featuring actors from across the border.

In December, Shah Rukh Khan met the MNS leader in Mumbai and assured him that Mahira Khan would not come to India for promotions. He also said he would never again work with actors from across the border.

"When people ask me, is this right or wrong - this is the current state of times. And I am not here to change the current state of times," Khan told Reuters.

"Solutions for this, somebody will find. And when they find it, they'll tell me. I am not here to solve problems," he said.

Khan's reluctance to speak his mind is not surprising considering the backlash against him and other actors. In 2015, Aamir Khan was trolled on social media and lost a lucrative endorsement contract after comments that he felt a sense of fear and insecurity in India.

Shah Rukh Khan's film ‘Dilwale’ faced right-wing ire that year after he said there was growing intolerance in India.

Last year, film-maker Karan Johar publicly apologised and promised not to cast Pakistani actors in his movies after the MNS threatened to disrupt screenings of his film ‘Ae Dil Hai Mushkil’, which featured Pakistani actor Fawad Khan.

Light-ing up The Broadway

FILM: Development on a new cinema and four new restaurants will begin at The Broadway next year

FILM: Development on a new cinema and four new restaurants will begin at The Broadway next year

More developments set for Bradford’s shopping centre

As customers continue to flock to The Broadway shopping centre in Bradford, developers have this past week announced further plans for even more extensions at the newly-opened site.

Four new restaurants and a six-screen cinema, operated by The Light, are set to begin construction early next year as the face of the city centre continues to change.

The extension, granted outline planning consent by Bradford Council in August 2015, will total 35,000 sqft in additional space for The Broadway and is set to create around 100 new jobs.

Terms have already been agreed with two of the four restaurants, with the other two under offer and operators set to be announced shortly.

Commenting on the plans a Meyer Bergman spokesperson said: “We’re thrilled that The Light has agreed to open its first luxury cinema in Yorkshire by coming to Bradford. Bringing on board such a high quality operator is a real vote of confidence in Bradford, and shows how The Broadway is helping to revolutionise retail in Bradford City Centre.

“Since opening on 5th November, The Broadway has gone from strength to strength, seeing 250,000 visitors in its first four days of trading and real interest in filling the few remaining retail units.

“Opening a fantastic new cinema and great new restaurants is a natural next step forward for The Broadway, and we look forward to these plans further aiding the regeneration of Bradford City Centre and supporting the night-time economy.”

The cinema, with the ability to seat up to 780 people, will be the first investment in West Yorkshire by The Light.

Bradford Council Leader, Cllr David Green, praised the project and the ‘pull-factor’ Bradford now has for new businesses.

“Having a new cinema and four new restaurants adjacent to The Broadway further boosts the fantastic cultural dimension of our city centre,” he said.

“I really believe that Bradford is now offering the full package that defines a great city.”
