Madhuri: “Bringing on Priyanka is perfect”

Bollywood's dancing diva Madhuri Dixit Nene was surprised when she got to know about the development of a series based on her. She says getting Indian actress Priyanka Chopra on board as an executive producer is a right step.

"I was pleasantly surprised when Sri Rao said he wanted to do a series inspired by my life in America," Madhuri said in a statement.

The story would follow how Madhuri settles down with her bi-cultural family and tries to bring her colourful lifestyle to an otherwise dull town.

In reality, Madhuri had taken a break from showbiz when she married Sriram Nene (Ram), who was based in US back then and shifted to Denver from Mumbai to start a family. The mother-of-two sons returned to showbiz around five years ago, and continues to be one of the most charming beauties in the Hindi film industry.

Sri Rao, a New York-based writer for shows like 'General Hospital: Night Shift', will pen the pilot and executive produce the series, as will Madhuri's husband.

The 'Dil Toh Pagal Hai' actress added: "As Ram and I chatted with Sri, the story evolved and Mark Gordon Productions came on board, wanting to produce it. Bringing on Priyanka was perfect in that she had experience with the landscape."

Priyanka currently stars on American show 'Quantico', which is going into its third season. Earlier this year, she made her Hollywood debut with 'Baywatch', and she is now shooting for romantic comedy 'Isn't It Romantic' with Liam Hemsworth.

Deepika Padukone out of Forbes’ list of highest paid actresses

Bollywood actress Deepika Padukone has dropped out of Forbes magazines World's Highest-Paid Actresses 2017 list, which is led by Hollywood actress Emma Stone.

Deepika, who was 10th in the 2016 list, has not been included this year despite having made her Hollywood debut with "xXx: Return of Xander Cage".

Stone collected $26 million due to her Oscar-winning performance in musical film ‘La La Land’ and has surpassed Jennifer Lawrence, who claimed the top spot in 2016 and 2015, reports forbes.com.

Stone spoke on gender parity earlier this year, sharing that her male co-stars have taken salary cuts so she could receive equal pay.

Actress Jennifer Aniston was runner-up with $25.5 million. While she continues to receive millions in royalties even a decade after ‘Friends’ ended, the actress, who appeared ‘The Yellow Bird’, also monetises different endorsements.

Lawrence dropped down two slots to number three with $24 million, almost half of her $46 million earnings in 2016.

Melissa McCarthy ($18 million), Mila Kunis ($15.5 million) and Emma Watson ($14 million) have come fourth, fifth and sixth on the list respectively.

Together, the world's 10 highest-paid actresses tallied a combined $172.5 million between June 1, 2016, and June 1, 2017, before fees and taxes. Earnings estimates are based on data from Nielsen, ComScore, Box Office Mojo and IMDB, as well as interviews with industry insiders.

Sajal Aly: “Bollywood was never my dream”

Pakistani actress Sajal Aly, who played a rape survivor in her Bollywood debut ‘Mom’, says she had never dreamed of acting in the Indian film industry.

Speaking about her role as 'Arya' in the Sridevi-starrer, Sajal said: "It was definitely a challenging role... I mean any character you play, you have to really commit to it and kind of naturally become like that, at least that's how I function.

"I think the most challenging part was performing with Sridevi ma'am. Like my very first scene in the movie is me sitting at a dining table across from her and misbehaving with her - it was terrifying!

"We had to shoot in Georgia and it was freezing cold... so yeah, that was pretty tough too," Sajal said.

Sajal said: "Bollywood was never my dream, in all honesty. I was happy working in Pakistan and that was not something I was working towards, but this story moved me.

"I always knew that if I worked in Bollywood, I have certain limitations and boundaries that I would not want to cross and this movie was about a sensitive topic, everything was handled so tastefully."

The actress is all praise for her co-star Sridevi, who plays her mother in the movie. "She's just the sweetest person. Even now, she keeps calling me and reminding me that I'm in her thoughts."

Sajal said she has three film contracts with Boney Kapoor, Sridevi's husband and a producer in Bollywood.

"But now I don't know what's in the near future. They handed me the complete package on a silver platter: a meaty character, an excellent cast, the best of the best and for that, I'm forever grateful...

"Everyone's sending me messages telling me they're proud of me, it's just the best feeling, knowing everyone appreciates your work, including critics from across the border."

Nina on a mission: Award-winning actress to host nationwide anti-trafficking appeal

Around 22.5 million South Asians suffer violence, trafficking and abuse, including sexual exploitation, domestic servitude, child labour, forced marriage, bride-buying and sex tourism.

Now, award-winning actress Nina Wadia is set to present a radio appeal, to increase awareness about human trafficking. She also aims to raise donations to help fight against it, as part of her role as an ambassador of the British Asian Trust.

The BBC Radio 4 broadcast will be aired twice, at 7.55am and again at 9.26pm on Sunday 5th February. The appeal will be repeated on Monday 9th February at 3.27pm.

Around 70% of  trafficked victims are female and one in three are children.

Extreme poverty and lack of education means that 70% of victims are illiterate and 50% earn less than $1 per day. An astonishing 40,000 children are reported abducted each year, with 11,000 untraced. In addition, 53% of children have reported sexual abuse.

Nina Wadia said: “I feel so proud to deliver this anti-trafficking appeal for the British Asian Trust to help protect the welfare of children and young people in South Asia.”

The British Asian Trust was founded in 2007 by HRH The Prince of Wales, who wanted to do something about the widespread poverty and hardship that he saw in South Asia.

He turned to the entrepreneurial spirit of the British Asian diaspora, bringing together visionary philanthropists and supporting grassroots initiatives that enable people to help themselves.

“I am hugely passionate about this cause and share a vision with the Trust to eliminate trafficking and enable all young people to fully achieve their potential and help shape the future of South Asia,” Nina added.

Richard Hawkes, CEO, British Asian Trust said: “We’re thrilled to have our ambassador Nina Wadia supporting us with our anti-trafficking campaign.

“The Indian Government reported a 25% increase in trafficking in 2015, which is a disturbing statistic. At the British Asian Trust, our vision is to protect children and young people from trafficking and abuse, while also rehabilitating victims.

“By forging partnerships with frontline organisations, stakeholders and the Government, we hope to work collaboratively to increase impact and raise awareness.”

So far, the charity has supported 9,500 girls and 18,600 families to improve safety, which includes collaboration with police and education officials, community supervision and links to key influencers.

“As a father, providing the best I can for my little angel is number one to me.”

“To know there are millions of precious children in the world living with no hope, in unimaginable conditions is heart-breaking.

sana-khan-800x664

Bollywood actress Sana Khan says she finds it strange when she is asked about bold scenes and wonders why there is so much noise about intimate scenes in Hindi movies.

“I find it weird when industry people talk like ‘that kind of scenes’. It is funny.

“Today, every single movie has a kissing scene. I don’t know why there is so much noise on doing intimate scenes,” she said.

Sana said it had happened with Vishal Pandya’s films. “There are so many films which have steamy scenes. Nobody puts a question on them.”

The ‘Jai Ho‘ actress said when people in India are becoming more open, intimate scenes aren’t a taboo anymore.

“It was part of the story. Today, we are open to western culture. We love to see Hollywood movies so much. When we are so open about everything, it is weird to raise brows on intimate scenes.”

“When I signed the film, people said I might be categorised in a certain way. They said the same when I entered ‘Big Boss’. Every actor has a different journey. Whatever I’ve done, it has turned out positive for me because I’ve done it with the right intention.”

Sana said: “As an actress, I always want to do new things. I have done a small role in ‘Jai Ho’. It was a negative character and now audience will see me in a proper role in the two and a half hours movie. I think that’s growth.”

Sana is set to star in the Vishal Pandya-directed ‘Wajah Tum Ho‘ alongside Sharman Joshi, TV actor Gurmeet Choudhary and Rajneesh Duggal. The film is scheduled for a worldwide release in December.

He has also rubbished reports that the release of his forthcoming Shah Rukh Khan-starrer 'Raees' has been postponed, saying the film will hit the screens as announced.

"I do not understand where all these rumours are coming from,” said Ritesh.

“I would only say one thing - I have shot with Mahira for 45 days and finished the film, I hope that clarifies things.”

'Raees', scheduled to release on 26th January, features Pakistani actress Mahira Khan who is making her Bollywood debut opposite Shah Rukh.

Directed by Rahul Dholakia, 'Raees' is set in 1980's Gujarat and tells the story of bootlegger Raees Khan (Shah Rukh), whose business is challenged and eventually thwarted by a police officer played by actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui.

There were reports that the makers were considering to push the release of the crime-drama, after MNS demanded a ban on Bollywood films starring Pakistani artistes, in wake of the Uri terror attack.

The Indian Motion Picture Producers Association (IMPPA), however, had a meeting with MNS and urged the political party not to hamper the release of the already shot films featuring Pakistani artistes.

When asked about the reports, Sidhwani told reporters, "We are sticking to the release date we announced earlier for 'Raees'. I don't think something like a ban has happened.

"The association has itself written to the government that people who have already made their films, who have completed their shooting, we should respect that. Let those movies release and whatever the government decides in the future, they will take a call on that," he said.

mahira-khan-main-347x450The producer, however, chose not to comment on whether a ban on Pakistani artistes was justified, and said he was pained and saddened by the terrorist attacks.

"I don't want to comment on that (Pakistani actors ban). It is very sensitive. Right now everything is very heated, I don't think it is the right moment to talk about it," he said.

Ritesh added that he has been visiting Delhi frequently for work and he will be begin to start shooting for the sequel of 'Fukrey' from 19th November. "The film will be shot across Delhi and will be a special film as the story has a different spin to it. I love shooting in Delhi. I think it is beautiful and it is at least better planned than Mumbai. It is not chaotic, it is fun."

Do you believe ‘One Night Stand’ is your ideal debut and what did your parents think?

Well, I think the role is definitely applaud fetching! About my parents – do you mean as a bold  theme? Well, me as an actor and my mother as a writer, we artists need to wellspring our artistic talents and insights to embrace such themes.

What talents do you bring to the industry?

I love dancing and I’ve always wanted to be an all rounder, so I believe I’m a thinker, a singing star, a good dancer and want to be a renowned actor.

If given an opportunity, would you have a one night stand?

Besides Deepika, another Bollywood actress Priyanka Chopra, who recently made her American TV debut with "Quantico", has reportedly bagged a role in 'Baywatch' movie opposite Dwayne Johnson.

Back home Deepika has been making the right noises and had a tremendous year in 2015 with the success of her films 'Piku', 'Tamasha' and 'Bajirao Mastani'. The actress says it has been her constant effort to keep improving every year and she is happy to see her efforts pay off two years in a row.

"I work to compete with myself and keep setting the benchmark for myself, to keep bettering, says Deepika.

After a successful 2014, I hoped I can do better and then it happened in 2015. It is my constant desire to keep improving," she adds.

With back-to-back film shoots and other commitments, the actress says she hardly gets time off. But despite her busy schedule, Deepika makes sure she reads and also tries her hands at baking.

"I haven't got a weekend for the past three years. But when I do get it, I like to just catch up on sleep. I also love baking and reading. Currently, I am reading the biography on Elizabeth Taylor.”

“Tabu is a director’s dream”

tabu-8 (315x450)Filmmaker Abhishek Kapoor, who roped in Tabu to play a prominent role in 'Fitoor', says she is a director's dream.

Veteran actress Rekha was initially roped in to play the character of Begum in 'Fitoor', but she walked out of the project in May 2015 and the role went to Tabu.

"Tabu is one of the few actresses who can mould herself according to the character. She is a dream for a director," Kapoor told reporters in a group interview.

"She never looks into mirror or monitor and always trusts the crew on sets.

“I am thankful to Tabu who stepped in at the last moment and got into the skin of the character within three to four days," added the filmmaker. Kapoor, who has widely shot 'Fitoor' in Kashmir, says he was very clear that he wanted to shoot this film in that state.

"Many people told me not to shoot in Kashmir and gave me the option to shoot either in Himachal or abroad, but Kashmir has a different beauty altogether. Dal Lake in Kashmir is something I can't take it away from the film. I was adamant I will make my film in Kashmir," said Kapoor.

The movie is an adaptation of Charles Dickens classic novel "Great Expectations" and will have Katrina Kaif playing Firdaus while Aditya Kapoor will portray the character of Noor. The film also stars Aditi Rao Hydari, Lara Dutta and Rahul Bhatt.

kangana_ranaut_MAIN (300x450)Kangana Ranaut slams award ceremonies

Bollywood actress Kangana Ranaut (28) has slammed film award ceremonies saying that they’re all “fake” and actually a commercial venture for the organisers.

Indian media has mocked her comments and has said that she’s trashing award ceremonies because she’s bitter about not bagging any awards during her career.

Having said that, she’s not the first who’s publically slammed these film award dos.

Aamir Khan, back in 90s, also decided to boycott awards and award ceremonies. His stand regarding shunning awards is still intact and he’s never been seen at any.

Kangna said: “'I feel it’s hard to stand against the system. But most of the time, the right thing is not the easiest to do. And I choose the right thing.

“I feel that awards shows today are just a facade that the event organisers put up. They are not genuine awards functions. I understand that these are commercial functions that are meant to generate target rating points (TRPs) and make money.

“So why this façade of felicitating artistes when that isn’t the case?

“Genuine artistes, like the best technicians, writers and actors are pushed to the tenth row, and sit with their families, hoping to figure out what’s going on with these fancy people, who are in the news for their relationships and item numbers.

“The main category goes to people who can help generate TRPs. And they might or might not even be deserving candidates. I feel this is not done and we need to change this.

“Organisers should be honest in saying that this is not an awards function; it’s just a function. I won’t be part of something so dishonest. I completely condemn them for that reason.”
