Fully furnished homes are providing widows and their children not just shelter, but dignity, stability, and the hope of a brighter future
Over the past two years, the Kashmir Orphan Relief Trust (KORT) has completed 82 homes for widows and their children. Each house stands as a safe haven for families who have endured immense loss and hardship, offering not only shelter but the promise of a new beginning.
Launched under the leadership of KORT Chairman, Chaudhry Mohammed Akhtar, the second phase aims to build 100 two-room homes across AJK to provide widows and their children with secure, dignified, and fully furnished housing.
The latest handover ceremony took place in Muzaffarabad, where widows from Neelum Valley, Leepa Valley, and surrounding districts received their house keys – and with them, a new chapter of hope.

“There are around 30,000 widows and children across Azad Jammu & Kashmir in desperate need of housing,” said Chaudhry Mohammed Akhtar.
“We began this initiative to ensure that no widow or child is left without shelter.
“Every home we build represents compassion in action – a testament to what can be achieved when humanity comes together.
“I extend my deepest gratitude to our donors in the UK and worldwide, whose generosity continues to make these projects possible. Their trust in KORT allows us to serve the most vulnerable with sincerity and transparency.”
Each completed house is fully furnished with basic essentials such as beds, kitchenware, and household necessities, ensuring that widows and their children can begin rebuilding their lives with comfort and security.
Beyond the bricks and mortar, these homes restore dignity, independence, and stability to women who have faced life’s toughest challenges alone.

For Ayesha and countless others, this project has been life-changing: “We will never forget those who stood by us when we had nothing. KORT has given us not just a home, but peace of mind and the strength to look forward again.”
The KORT Widow Housing Project is more than a construction effort; it’s a movement of compassion, showing how community-driven generosity can rewrite the stories of those most in need.
Each home built is a powerful reminder that no one should have to struggle alone – and that with the right support, widows can rebuild their futures with strength, pride, and resilience.
