FAVOURITES: Married couple, Imran - a Muslim and Sukhvinder - a Sikh, came up against adversity as their families opposed them being together

The pair from Leeds have an intriguing back story as the childhood sweethearts faced disapproval since their relationship began.

Imran, a Muslim and Sukhvinder, a Sikh come up against adversity as their families opposed them being together.

The pair met when they were just eight-years-old and at the start of their relationship Imran, who is from a ‘strict Muslim family’ and Sukhvinder, who was ‘raised in a strict Sikh family’, had to keep their romance secret as such a  relationship was frowned upon.

Having to sneak out to see each other, they were married by 17 in an Islamic ceremony.

Before entering the house, entrepreneur Imran said he wanted the UK to see what a modern Muslim looks like.

He also stated: “I want to show my children how to be a good person. I want to be an example to the next generation as well and let them know it’s not all about social media.”

Whereas Sukhvinder said: I want to meet the world and I want the world to meet me too! Life is an amazing gift and if you aren’t on TV then who are you?’

Sukhvinder is the Managing Director and Inventor for her own company and feels mums are the unsung heroes of the world.

SINGING SENSATION AT NINE! Age is no issue for young Yorkshire celeb

PASSIONATE: Jovan has been singing since he was just two-years-old and says there is nothing else he wants to do when he is older

PASSIONATE: Jovan has been singing since he was just two-years-old and says there is nothing else he wants to do when he is older

Whilst most nine-year-olds are busy learning their fractions and the correct way to use a comma, one talented youngster from Otley is busy brushing up on something a little different...his singing.

With a ‘natural gift for performing’ Jovan Boughan is becoming quite the mini celebrity in West Yorkshire thanks to his velvety vocal talents.

Singing in front of hundreds of people, the Menston Primary School pupil has performed at over a dozen events already, from lavish weddings and birthday parties to retail openings and charity events.

Despite his young age, confidence is no issue for the singing sensation who is always happy to showcase his skills no matter the occasion.

“I started singing when I was two when we were on a family holiday in Canada,” Jovan said. “I kept singing the same song over and over again - Jaz Dhami’s Theke Wali.

“I just loved the song and would sing it everywhere we went. Jaz Dhami is still my inspiration today.”

As a toddler, Jovan’s talent was spotted by his parents who say they were ‘amazed’ by the voice their eldest child possessed.

His father, Sony, even managed to arrange a special performance with Jaz Dhami for Jovan when he was just three-years-old – an experience, the family still have video evidence of today.

“I got in touch with Jaz’s management team and just asked if there was any chance of Jovan meeting him because he was such a big fan,” Sony said.

“They were more than happy to help, and he actually met Jovan at his sister’s first birthday party. He came inside and they both sung together.”

Jovan adds: “I can still remember it. It was great to sing with him and three years ago I got to do it all again.

“The first time I was still very little but it was really good. When I was six and met Jaz Dhami again, I was even more star-struck. I couldn’t even speak at first because he is the singer I look up to.”

SUPPORTIVE: Jovan’s parents, Sony and Imreeta Boughan (also pictured with daughter Aikam), say they are ‘incredibly proud’ of their son’s confidence and talent

Now nine, Jovan is known by his family and friends as a legitimate performer.

During a recent school project, classmates even chose the mini singer as their favourite celebrity they would like to interview.

Sony admits that the family were a bit nervous the first time Jovan was asked to perform, but now with such regular appearances, they are able to just ‘sit back and enjoy’ the show.

“Today there are no nerves,” he added. “We know what Jovan loves to do and he has so much confidence and charisma when he performs that we can just sit back and enjoy his performance.

“Away from singing, he is a different person. I don’t know what happens when he is on stage but he has a kind of arrogance that people just love.

“At home and school, he is a really good boy. It must be his stage presence.”

Vinayak Chaturthi, the Hindu festival celebrated in honour of the elephant-headed god Ganesha, has been celebrated with its affiliated vibrancy all across the world.

The modern-day version of public celebrations in India involves installing clay murtis (idols) of Ganesha in public pandals (temporary shrines) and worshipped together for ten days. It’s not uncommon for some murtis to scale to 70 feet in height.

But in Mumbai, there is a special spirit of oneness when you see Bollywood stars join the excitement, visiting the famous Siddhivinayak Temple to take part in the ‘aarti’, like any commoner. Aarti is a Hindu religious ritual of worship, a part of puja, in which light from wicks soaked in ghee (purified butter) or camphor is offered to one or more deities.

The 10-day festival kick-started on 17th September whilst the grand immersion took place on 27th, after which the idol is immersed into water.

Shilpa Shetty and Raj Kundra took their little boy Viaan for the immersion. Raj carried his son on his shoulders while Shilpa danced along with the crowd.

Meanwhile Rishi Kapoor and Neethu Singh were joined by their daughter Riddhima and granddaughter Samara while offering prayers at a temple.

Akshay Kumar son Aarav, who turned 13 recently, joined his mum Twinkle and grandmother Dimple for a procession before offering the prayers and immersing the idol in the sea.

UK stars call on Prime Minister to help Syrian refugees

Celebrities from Sting to Emma Thompson and Michael Palin have written an open letter to the Prime Minister criticising his take

Celebrities from Sting to Emma Thompson and Michael Palin have written an open letter to the Prime Minister criticising his take

A star-studded list of UK celebrities from Oscar-winning actress Emma Thompson, to musician Sting and television presenter/actor Micahel Palin wrote to Prime Minister David Cameron on Monday 26th January, criticising the government for not welcoming more Syrian refugees.

A year ago, Britain announced it would accept several hundred of the most vulnerable Syrian refugees as part of a special resettlement programme.

But the latest figures show only 90 have arrived so far, according to the Refugee Council, one of the leading charities in Britain working directly with refugees.

"In a climate where children are sent to work in order to help their parents survive, where young girls are sold off as child brides and where torture victims are unable to rebuild their lives, every resettlement place (that) countries like Britain provide is a lifeline"

, the celebrities said in an open letter.

"Resettling 'several hundred people' just isn't good enough for a global leader. This issue isn't about migration statistics or party politics, it's about people. It's about the values that we in Britain hold dear; compassion and humanity."

Other celebrities who lent their support were actresses Vanessa Redgrave, Juliet Stevenson and Michelle Dockery, artist Grayson Perry, and film directors Ken Loach and Stephen Frears. Television presenters Dan Snow and fashion designers Vivienne Westwood Bella Freud also signed the letter.

The exodus from Syria's nearly four-year conflict is one of the largest forced migrations of people since World War Two.

At least 3.7 million Syrians from a population of about 23 million are registered as refugees, mainly in neighbouring states, which are straining to provide accommodation, food, water and sanitation to the new arrivals.

In Lebanon, home to 1.16 million Syrian refugees, one in four residents is a refugee. Turkey hosts a further 1.62 million Syrian refugees, Jordan 622,000 and Iraq 235,600, according to the latest figures from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).

The UNHCR, which wants to resettle 130,000 Syrians outside the region by the end of 2016, has repeatedly urged rich nations to show solidarity with Syria's neighbours and take more refugees.

Since 2013, Germany has pledged to take in 30,000 Syrians, Australia 5,600, Sweden 1,200 and Norway 1,000.

The Refugee Council's Chief Executive Maurice Wren said Britain's funding to the relief effort was not enough, in a bid to escalate the issue in political debate ahead of a general election in Britain in May.

"The question is does David Cameron want to go down in history as the prime minister who rationed his compassion to a few hundred people when there was the opportunity to offer safety to so many more?" he said in a statement.

Mark Goldring, the chief executive of Oxfam, has also lobbied for more refugees to be resettled in Britain.

"We can no longer continue to treat this problem solely at arms length. For some refugees, life in camps or makeshift shelters is not just hard, it is impossible," he said.

The statements come as Syrian refugees endure a particularly severe winter in the Middle East.

Ranbir Kapoor joins TAG Heuer

TAG Heuer, the world leader in prestigious and high-end chronographs, has just announced the signing of Bollywood Superstar Ranbir Kapoor for a long-term partnership as a Brand Ambassador.

With this association, TAG Heuer reinforces its leadership position by becoming the only brand in the industry endorsed by two of the biggest names in Bollywood – Shah Rukh Khan and Ranbir Kapoor.

The versatile actor and today’s youth icon, Ranbir Kapoor joins a renowned roster of international sports stars and celebrities that includes football superstar and two time winner of the Ballon d’Or award Cristiano Ronaldo, WTA tennis champion Maria Sharapova, Hollywood film actress Cameron Diaz, Bollywood Actor Shah Rukh Khan, Formula One World Champion Jenson Button, World Rally Champion Sébastien Ogier and the entire crew of 2013 America’s Cup winner Oracle Team USA.

The Swiss Avant-Garde watchmaker is best known for breaking rules: harnessing mental fortitude to overcome technology restraints and deliver ground breaking innovation.

Their ‘Don’t crack under pressure’ campaign asserts the powerful truth that achievement is due as much to mental strength as to physical capabilities. A truth that is exhibited in the daring watches and chronographs produced by TAG Heuer.

“Far more than a claim, it is a powerful mindset,” said TAG Heuer CEO Stephane Linder.

“Those who know TAG Heuer may recognize the motto, a tribute to an early 90’s campaign which for many remains the most archetypal expression of TAG Heuer’s unbreakable determination.

“The campaign captures the mental strength of our Dream Team, athletes and partners, who reflect the values of the TAG Heuer shield. Be it Cristiano Ronaldo the perfectionist, Maria Sharapova the irresistible, Shah Rukh Khan the King of Bollywood or our latest ambassador Ranbir Kapoor. In India, we are proud to have two of the best names in Bollywood sporting TAG Heuer and we see a great future with them in the coming years.”

“TAG Heuer has always been one of my dreams,” said Ranbir Kapoor. “It started when I was really young, it was the first watch I wanted to own in my life. I remember my parents gifted it to me on my 13th birthday.

“So now, to be associated with the brand is really humbling for me. I really have to pinch myself to believe that I am part of the TAG Heuer family.

“I think TAG Heuer stands for the four principle P’s that is prestige, precision, passion and performance. I think that is something we all and especially I can identify with; the way I look at my career, my life. I believe these are very important aspects for how one should approach their life, their work and their relationships.”

Through his successful career in Bollywood films, Ranbir has become one of the most popular celebrities in India. He is the recipient of several awards and nominations, including five Filmfare Awards for his memorable performances in movies like ‘Rockstar’, ‘Barfi’, ‘Wake Up Sid’, ‘Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani’ and many more.

Apart from winning accolades for his experimental style of acting, he has also been listed as the ‘Sexiest Man Alive’ in India and in 2013 he topped Filmfare's poll of the ‘Most Stylish Young Actor’ and was one of the recipients of ‘People of the Year’ award by the Limca Book of Records.

In addition to acting in films, Ranbir is a football enthusiast and supports numerous charities and causes.

He endorses the Spanish football club FC Barcelona and is the vice-captain of the All Stars Football Club, a celebrity football club that raises money for charity. He is a co-owner of the Indian Super League football team ‘Mumbai City FC’, and is the co-founder of the production company ‘Picture Shuru Productions’.

Ayesha Takia Azmi gives chicks a clucking chance

Ayesha Takia Azmi

Ayesha Takia Azmi

Since her award-winning debut in ‘Taarzan: The Wonder Car’, it was clear that Ayesha Takia Azmi would be one to watch.

She blew audiences and critics away in the thriller Wanted, and now India's sweetheart is starring in a role that is true to life for her: that of an animal advocate.

Just in time for World Vegan Day on 1st November, Takia Azmi flashes her lovely smile in a new PETA India ad, that lets everyone know that "vegans make chicks happy!"

Her co-star is one of the few "chicks" whose sweet face can hold her own next to Takia Azmi: a fluffy baby chick. Celebrated photographer Gaurav Sawn shot the ad, and talented artist Satyam Kadu did her hair and make-up.

Takia Azmi also sat down with PETA India for an exclusive video interview.

On set, Takia Azmi talked about how her respect for animals made her go vegan.

"It's beyond traumatic to hear the things that the animals go through when they are obviously slaughtered, the way they are kept, the way they are treated", she said.

She thinks it is inexcusable that chickens' throats are slashed and they are dunked into scalding-hot feather-removal tanks, often while they are still conscious.

She is proud that she helps end cruelty to animals every time she sits down to eat. "Being vegan is something that has changed my life tremendously", she said.

Takia Azmi joins a long list of actors, athletes and other celebrities – including Lara Dutta, Shahid Kapoor, Esha Gupta, Sonu Sood, Richa Chadda, Pankaj Advani, Anil Kumble, Hema Malini, VVS Laxman, Amrita Rao, R Madhavan, Kartik Murali, Rahul Sharma and Monica Dogra – who have starred in pro-vegetarian ads for PETA India.
