Bollywood superstar Akshay Kumar is on a mission to help drought-affected, poverty-stricken farmers in India. The generous actor and philanthropist recently donated the substantial sum of Rs. 50 lakh (around £50,000) to the flagship water conservation scheme, ‘Jal Yukta Shivar’, an initiative established by the Chief Minister of Maharashtra. The scheme, promoted vigorously by the CM, envisages constructing ponds on farms for water harvesting, and so making villages ‘drought-proof’.
Akshay Kumar is so passionate about the cause that last month the star went up on stage after a fashion show in Delhi to request guests to donate for the cause.
Apart from this, Akshay has got in touch with banks in some of the drought affected areas to draw up a list of farmers struggling with repayment of loans, as he is keen to settle the debt of farmers without their knowledge.
Last month Akshay Kumar donated Rs. 90 Lakh to drought-stricken Maharashtra farmers. Many farmers’ lives were devastated because of the recent drought in Maharashtra when the official crop, the Kharif crop, was completely destroyed. The drought occurred because of inadequate monsoon rains in Maharashtra.
When asked about his charity, Akshay simply said: “It is a matter of concern, and I just hope more and more people get involved with this cause.”
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis thanked the actor for his contribution to ‘Jal Yukta Shivar’ in an official statement.
That Varun Dhawan is hugely popular with the ladies is no surprise. The young actor’s six-pack, cute looks and incredible charm on the screen have won him a huge female fan following.
However, this time he is out to prove a different point. ‘Badlapur’, a revenge saga directed by thriller specialist Sriram Raghavan, has garnered quite a few eyeballs with its trailer that shows Varun in a different role altogether.
Kissing in Bollywood movie scenes has always been and still very much is a bit scandalous. However 27-year-old Varun Dhawan and 37-year-old Divya Dutta share a wild and lusty kiss in the film, which has earned it quite a buzz.
Those who have seen the trailer must have noticed the fleeting lip-lock between the two, to which Varun commented: "The kissing scenes are organic.
“I was very comfortable kissing Divya. Why not? Look at her. She is so sexy!"
Playing a man possessed by revenge, the film is based on a true story and has an impressive ensemble cast of Huma Qureshi, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Yami Gautam and Divya Dutta.
Varun can talk at length about how he prepared for the role, how the intense scenes affected his state of mind and his excitement about doing something truly different.
Of course, the media has so far focused on the steamy scenes he shares with Yami Gautam and Divya Dutta but the actor isn’t perturbed.
Talking about ‘Badlapur’ Varun says that he’ faced a few nerves because it’s not the regular run-of-the-mill thriller. In the film he plays three different age-groups, in my 20s, 30s and 40s, so it’ll be interesting to see this young actor’s performance.
Talking about this new avatar he comments: “There are two sides to a coin.
“Sriram (Raghavan, the director behind movies like Johnny Gaddar and Ek Hasina Thi) sticks to his material no matter what.
“He wouldn’t want to make his hero sing or dance suddenly. The thought of what if it fails does stick but working with this team itself is going to be a huge reward.
“Any negative thought gets overshadowed by the positives of working with this team.”
Arjun Kapoor’s obnoxious; angry young man character in his first film ‘Ishaqzaade’ became quite popular with filmmakers and audiences.
While each of his characters, be it ‘Gunday’ or upcoming film ‘Tevar’, appear to be on the same lines, Arjun feels its merely people’s assumption.
Says Arjun: “Until you watch the film; you won’t come to know how ‘Tevar’ is different from ‘Ishaqzaade’. There is a difference in their journeys.
“Both the characters and stories are altogether different. It’s just people’s assumption that I am playing an angry young man once again, which is incorrect. After looking at one or two shots from the film, people concluded that I am playing angry man in ‘Tevar’.”
He adds, “In ‘Ishaqzaade’, I played a character, who is mentally not very happy, lost in his world. It had little grey shades. While in ‘Gunday’, I played a short-tempered, front-footed, arrogant goon. Whereas, Pinto Shukla of ‘Tevar’ is a normal guy, dwelling in a small town, who has not found direction in life. He lives in his own world and gives a damn about others. He is an ordinary boy who gets stuck in extraordinary situation.”
