In the hills of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), a quiet revolution in education is taking shape.

The Kashmir Orphan Relief Trust (KORT), in partnership with One Nation UK, has embarked on an ambitious mission to ensure that every child – regardless of background or circumstance, has access to quality education.

So far, 20 new schools have been completed under the Education for All AJK initiative, bringing learning within reach for hundreds of children who once faced barriers too high to climb.

For many families, where poverty and distance have long stood in the way, these schools represent not just classrooms, but lifelines to opportunity.

Education, as KORT’s chairman Chaudhry Mohammed Akhtar often reminds supporters, is not merely about books or blackboards – it is the foundation of hope, progress, and self-reliance.

In regions like AJK, where resources are scarce and economic challenges persist, providing a child with education can transform not only an individual life, but an entire community’s future.

In November, the initiative expanded beyond infrastructure to meet practical needs. At the Government Boys and Girls Primary Schools in Mawa, Islamgarh, KORT and One Nation UK distributed essential school supplies – from bags and uniforms to stationery and shoes, ensuring children could attend school with pride and confidence.

For the students, these simple items carried immense significance.

A new schoolbag, a pair of shoes, a set of books, each became a symbol of belonging, of being seen and supported.

“When children arrive at school prepared, their confidence soars,” said one KORT volunteer. “They walk taller, learn better, and dream bigger.”

The Education for All AJK programme is part of KORT’s broader vision to break cycles of deprivation through empowerment.

What began as an orphanage and relief effort has evolved into one of Pakistan’s most respected grassroots charities, extending support into housing, healthcare, and education across the region.

With continued support from One Nation UK and the generosity of donors, the project is steadily rewriting the narrative for children in AJK. It is ensuring that learning is no longer a privilege reserved for a few, but a right accessible to all.

KORT’s chairman Chaudhry Mohammed Akhtar comments: “Education, after all, is the great equaliser – a force that shapes minds, communities, and generations.

“Through compassion, collaboration, and action, KORT is helping build a future where knowledge becomes not just power, but a promise of possibility.”
