A free event – which celebrated the victory of good over evil – was enjoyed by hundreds of people at Bolton Indian Sport’s Club on Tuesday 12th October.
The Hindu-led event, called Dussehra, celebrated the day that Lord Rama, the seventh incarnation of Lord Vishnu, killed 10-headed demon Ravana and the Goddess Durga killed buffalo demon Mahishashur.
The highlight was the burning of the effigy of Ravana — the king of the demons with 10 heads, each representing evil, hatred, jealousy and selfishness.
Paras Agravat, Bolton Hindu Forum’s Project Develoment Officer, said: “Dussehra is such an important event in the local calendar as it’s the biggest traditional event of its kind in the north of England.
“For over 30 years, Bolton Indian Sports Club has been the venue for this.
“Just like Bonfire night, the event is etched into people’s memories from childhood. It has always been open to everyone, and so many people from the wider community attend, as well as local dignitaries.
“So many of the Hindu festivals are celebratory in nature, even people of different faiths and none come and enjoy the festivities. There are always plenty of activities to keep people occupied, music, and – of course – food.
“The message of the event transcends any religion and its universal message is something that all people can relate and learn from.”
