Mayor of London set to rub shoulders with Bollywood celebs

The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, is expected to meet leading figures in India’s phenomenally successful Bollywood film industry during his visit to India and Pakistan later this year.

In what will be the first time a Mayor of London has visited both countries, Khan will meet senior politicians, business leaders and city chiefs in six major cities on a six-day mission to strengthen their economic and cultural ties with London.

The Mayor will visit Mumbai, Delhi and Amritsar in India, before heading to Lahore, Islamabad and Karachi in Pakistan on a trip that will take place towards the end of the year. Sadiq is the first major British politician to embark on a trade mission to both countries in recent times.

Sadiq’s primary goal is to promote the ‘London is Open’ campaign as the theme of his first official visit to both countries.

He will proclaim that London remains the world’s number-one destination for business, investment, talent and ideas during a series of high-profile events and meetings. And he will seek to demonstrate that, despite the EU Referendum vote, London continues to welcome people from across the world to work, study or visit.

The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, said: “As someone whose grandparents were born in India, and whose parents moved to London from Pakistan, I feel a deep affinity for the subcontinent.

"But what excites me most about this trip is that I know it can deliver real benefits for Londoners. Benefits in terms of business and trade, jobs and investment, and in terms of cultural and technological exchange.

“This is a really important mission as there are so many areas in which London can work with its counterparts across India and Pakistan. Not only in business but in tackling some of the biggest challenges we all face – such as air pollution and climate change.

“I am passionate about showing that my city will always be open to engaging with partners from around the world, and I look forward to strengthening the bonds between London and our friends in India and Pakistan later this year.”

The itinerary for the Mayor’s visit is still being finalised but in both India and Pakistan he will meet with senior politicians, business leaders, artists, investors and entrepreneurs to discuss common areas of interest and opportunities to work together.

The Mayor will be accompanied by his Deputy Mayor for Business, Rajesh Agrawal

The Mayor will be accompanied by his Deputy Mayor for Business, Rajesh Agrawal and a packed agenda in both countries is expected to include discussions on business and investment, regeneration opportunities, visas and major events.

Between 2005 and 2016 the UK was the second largest destination for Indian investment and 44 per cent of the fastest growing Indian companies now have a base in London.

Sadiq is expected to meet leading figures in India’s phenomenally successful Bollywood film industry as well as representatives from the tech, education and sports sectors. In 2017, the UK and India have been celebrating a bilateral year of cultural exchange. A major programme of cultural events and activities in India have been organised by the British Council, and a similar programme in the UK organised by the Government of India.

A delegation of business leaders taking part in the Mayor’s International Business Programme will also meet up with Sadiq in Mumbai before they move onto Hyderabad and Bangalore.

Bilateral trade between the UK and Pakistan is valued at £2bn, and in 2015 five Pakistani companies were listed on the London Stock Exchange with a combined market value of £10.5bn. As a sign of an improving economy, in May Morgan Stanley Capital International (MSCI) reclassified Pakistan as an emerging market from frontier market status, driving a bullish trend in the Pakistan Stock Exchange. With a national population of 207 million and a fast-growing middle class, more than 100 British businesses are doing business in Pakistan to make the most of the massive opportunities

Only two cities in the world provide more investment in Pakistan than the capital and major London businesses operating in the country include Ernst & Young and Standard Chartered.

Key events attended by Sadiq are expected to involve figures from the Pakistani cultural, sporting and financial sectors. The Mayor will also be accompanied by a group of senior business executives from the capital who are looking for trade deals or investment opportunities there. To mark the 70th Independence Anniversary of Pakistan, the Pakistan High Commission in London have commissioned ‘Emerging Pakistan’, a year-long campaign that showcases Pakistani culture, its landscape and people.

Pakistani celebs who turned down Bollywood

Hamza-Ali-COVER (329x500)Hamza Ali Abbasi - who first shot to fame in ‘Pyaray Afzal’ - was offered a role in Akshay Kumar’s ‘Baby’ which he rejected as his sequences were based on anti-Pakistan theme this year.

The role was eventually taken up by another Pakistani actor - Mikaal Zulfiqar.

Hamza, who’s an actor-turned-social media activist, is known for his controversial and brash views – he regularly takes to Facebook and Twitter to air his views about everything from showbiz and society to politics and religion. He says he considers it is his responsibility to do so.

During an interview he said: “I feel it's an insult to me if I ever feel scared of something, the biggest misconception in Pakistan is that you can’t speak your mind.

“A while back, I said a few things about religion and art, how they're not different from each other. Some people hurled abuses at me, others agreed with my opinion.”

Does his vocal nature hurt his career? We know brands have retracted contracts and whatnot. It's a thought that doesn’t cross his mind, we guess.

Hamza believes that rozi-roti lies with God alone: “If we agree that respect or disrespect is given by God, this idea can actually liberate you.”

If his bold stance and affiliations with a political party are leading people to believe that he's contemplating a career in politics, Hamza lays those assumptions to rest.

“I’m not a career politician, but being a Pakistani, everyone should have a political opinion. If good people stay out of politics, then we will be ruled by the scum of the earth.”

So where is his career headed? While he didn't talk about his directorial venture Kambakth, he did make clear his thoughts about the industry at large:

His favourite medium is TV for its wide reach, but Hamza has high hopes for the film industry. While he says that film is yet to be the bigger medium, its revival in Pakistan has been incredibly fast-paced.

“This was made at a time when we were making one good film every few years, and this year we have ten films that we want to watch in cinemas.
“All this is happening with hardly any resources; imagine what we can do in ten years when we have a proper infrastructure in place.

“I’ve had three to four Bollywood offers, really good ones. But I don’t see myself going to Bollywood. I don't need to.

“If the film industry in Pakistan was non-existent, it would have been another story - but our cinema is getting to world class level. I'd be crazy to leave right now.”

Shaan-Shahid (334x500)45-year-old Shaan Shahid is undoubtedly the don of Pakistan’s film world - Lollywood. The actor, writer, model, and film director who made his debut in 1990 in Javed Fazli's film ‘Bulandi’ starring opposite Reema Khan, has 500 films tucked under his belt.

He was approached to play the role of a baddie in Amir Khan’s ‘Ghajini’, but he refused it as he didn’t want to disappoint his Pakistani viewers and fans who adore him as a hero and not as a villain.

Faysal Quraishi

Faysal-Quraishi-8 (800x533)

A popular star in the Pakistani television industry, Faysal-Quraishi has been offered a number of Bollywood films, but the actor/director says that he’s never been keen on working in Bollywood.

He is known for directing or writing comedy dramas, sitcoms, commercials and music videos and over the years, Faysal has carved a niche for himself with his stunning performances in many super-hit Pakistani drama serials.

From his rustic role in ‘Boota’ to his critically acclaimed character of Ayaz in ‘Roag’, he’s proved time and again that he can portray any character with ease. With his menacing role as Bashar in Pakistan's most expensive drama ‘Bashar Momin’, the Pakistani celebrity reached totally new heights.

Saba-Qamar (332x500)

Saba Qamar

32-year-old Saba Qamar, who’s worked hard to earn respect as an outstanding and versatile Pakistani actress, model and host, has been offered four Hindi film projects, two of them being ‘Delhi 6’ and ‘Love Aaj Kal’, which she rejected.

The beautiful babe, who made her debut on a Pakistan ‘Main aurat hoon’, has worked in numerous hit dramas like ‘Dastaan’, ‘Maat’ and ‘Yahan Pyar Nahi Hai’, also hosts the television comedy ‘Hum Sab Umeed Se Hain’.

Humanyun Saeed

Humayun-Saeed (800x533)

He has proved his potential as a powerhouse performer in several Pakistani dramas. But when it came to working in Bollywood, the actor always rejected the offers made to him.

Sajjal Ali

sajal-ali (800x533)

The pretty lass is just too happy with the fame and respect she has achieved through her Pakistani shows that she has no plans to do Hindi films.

Sanam Jung

The beautiful actress underlines that she can’t shed her inhibitions and go bold onscreen, which is usually the demand in Hindi films. Thus, she rejected few Hindi films she was offered in the past.

The gorgeous girl was approached for ‘Jut James Bond’ starring opposite Jimmy Shergill, but she showed no interest in the film and turned it down.

50-year-old Sanjay Hinduja wed renowned fashion designer Anu Mahtani, in a stunning £15 million wedding extravaganza, topped with live performances by Jennifer Lopez and Nicole Scherzinger for the wedding guests, costing an estimated £1 million.

Some 16,000 guests that attended, included some of the world’s richest and most powerful people, as well as politicians and the crème de la crème of Bollywood celebrities.

The week-long wedding earlier this month was hosted in some of India’s most exclusive hotels including the Taj Mahal Palace in Mumbai, and the Jagmandir Island Palace in Udaipur.

The groom, Sanjay Hinduja, is the eldest son of Gopichand and the nephew of Srichand – who are currently the richest men in Britain, with a fortune estimated to be an impressive £11.9 billion.
Many of the distinguished guests flew in on 208 privately-chartered flights. With so many planes landing at the airport, there was not enough space to park the jets, which each cost £2,000-per-hour to hire.

On Tuesday 10th February 2015, around 800 guests moved on to the scenic lakeside town of Udaipur in Rajasthan.

They were housed at the Jagmandir Island Palace Hotel in Lake Pichola, which is famous for being the setting for the Bond film, ‘Octopussy’. Guests were transported to the island on 14 fully adorned boats.

The festivities in Udaipur began with a cocktail party at the Manek Chowk, which is inside the historic Palace of Kings in the centre of Udaipur.

This was followed by the ‘Mehndi’ ceremony, in which Anu’s hands and feet were decorated with elaborately-patterned henna tattoos. In a modern twist, this was done as a pool-side party.

On the eve of Sanjay’s and Anu’s big day, a ‘Sangeet’ ceremony was held. This included performances by X-Factor judge and pop sensation Nicole Scherzinger, and Bollywood star Arjun Kapoor. They were supported by a full troupe of dancers and a vibrant lighting exhibition.

On the wedding day itself, guests were treated to folk music as they arrived, and had a choice of 16 different types of cuisine.

Jennifer Lopez performed for the first time in India. During her stay in the country, she stayed at the £3,000-per-night Kohinoor Suite, of the Oberoi Udaivilas Hotel. Known for travelling with her extensive entourage, J-Lo brought her troupe of dancers which included ex-boyfriend Casper Smart.

The heir to the Hinduja empire, Sanjay, has spent much of his life in Tehran and London. He worked in banking before joining the family business in his early twenties. Specialising in oil and energy, in 2005, he became the chairman of Gulf Oil International, one of the world’s biggest traders in petroleum products.

The Hinduja Group is headquartered in New Zealand House on Haymarket, in the West End of London. But the company has its origins in India, when in 1914, Sanjay’s grandfather, Parmanand, moved to Mumbai to begin trading.

Parmanand’s wealth grew when he began importing from and exporting to Iran. From the 1970s, the Hinduja Group started to develop into the global business that it is today.

Known in their native India as the “Fab Four”, all of the brothers are teetotal and vegetarian. Sri and Gopi moved to London, third brother, Prakash, lives in Geneva and the fourth, Ashok, remains in Mumbai. Sri – who is also known as SP – took over control of the global company following the death of his father in 1971.

Today, the Hinduja Group employs 70,000 people in 37 countries. It has joint ventures with other groups including Japanese car manufacturer, Nissan, and British bus manufacturer, Optare.
