Last month, Leeds-based Indian restaurant, Raies, celebrated the refurbishment of their premises on Roundhay Road, after more than 35 years in business.

The newly refurbished restaurant, now with additional upstairs dining space and stylish decor, held a number of special evenings throughout the opening fortnight whereby £1,112.60 was raised for Cancer Research UK.

Raies Indian Restaurant has supported Cancer Research UK for many years and was happy to hand over a donation to the charity earlier this week.

The official opening took place on Wednesday 20th November 2013 with a host of well known guests gathering to welcome the grand reopening. All food was served free of charge, and donations to Cancer Research UK were made instead, with over £800 being raised on that first night alone.

Mr Max Kiani has been supporting the charity for a number of years and was overwhelmed by the generosity of his diners.

He said:  “I would like to thank the generous nature of the people from Leeds; they’ve always been very supportive of the work that we do, and are the main reason that we have been so successful in making this amazing sum of money.”

Chloé Williams, Cancer Research UK’s Local Fundraising Manager for Leeds added: “I would like to thank Raies Restaurant for the fantastic amount they have raised and the massive contribution they have made to our vital work over a number of years.

“Cancer Research UK has made enormous progress in the fight against cancer and continues to do so. However, we have only been able to do this thanks to the dedication and commitment of our volunteers and supporters without whom we would not be able to fund our vital research.”

Raies restaurant’s latest refurbishment cost more than £100,000 and has helped establish the eatery as one of the top dining hotspots in the city.

Speaking about the developments, Mr Kiani said: “We used to be able to serve up to 40 people at once when we had our old layout but now, by having the upstairs area, we are able to cater for parties and private functions at the same time as serving smaller groups.

“It means we are more than just a restaurant; we can welcome groups to come and dine here which is something we are hoping to build on in the coming weeks.”
