Bollywood actress Deepika Padukone has dropped out of Forbes magazines World's Highest-Paid Actresses 2017 list, which is led by Hollywood actress Emma Stone.
Deepika, who was 10th in the 2016 list, has not been included this year despite having made her Hollywood debut with "xXx: Return of Xander Cage".
Stone collected $26 million due to her Oscar-winning performance in musical film ‘La La Land’ and has surpassed Jennifer Lawrence, who claimed the top spot in 2016 and 2015, reports forbes.com.
Stone spoke on gender parity earlier this year, sharing that her male co-stars have taken salary cuts so she could receive equal pay.
Actress Jennifer Aniston was runner-up with $25.5 million. While she continues to receive millions in royalties even a decade after ‘Friends’ ended, the actress, who appeared ‘The Yellow Bird’, also monetises different endorsements.
Lawrence dropped down two slots to number three with $24 million, almost half of her $46 million earnings in 2016.
Melissa McCarthy ($18 million), Mila Kunis ($15.5 million) and Emma Watson ($14 million) have come fourth, fifth and sixth on the list respectively.
Together, the world's 10 highest-paid actresses tallied a combined $172.5 million between June 1, 2016, and June 1, 2017, before fees and taxes. Earnings estimates are based on data from Nielsen, ComScore, Box Office Mojo and IMDB, as well as interviews with industry insiders.
“The gun-training, the weapons, the knives – those were the things that I needed to work on.”
In xXx: Return of Xander Cage, Bollywood beauty Deepika Padukone stars as Serena Unger - the deadly rival turned xXx partner-in-crime in Vin Diesel’s merry band of lethal misfits.
Centred around retrieving a device called the ‘Pandora’s Box’, a nifty little gadget capable of hijacking and weaponising satellites, the third installment in the franchise sees Padukone and Diesel in a race against time to save the day.
Listed by Forbes as one of the highest paid Indian actresses working today, 31-year-old Deepika Padukone is one of the movie’s most beloved stars in her native country. Her collaboration with co-star Vin Diesel and director DJ Caruso in xXx marks her Hollywood debut.
“I think every woman has that strong, heroic voice inside them.”
We spoke with Deepika about the making of her new film in Mexico City.
What’s it like making your Hollywood debut?
It’s been so exciting and so much fun. I think this was the most-perfect launch of a new film that anyone could have asked for, period. Considering what a big franchise movie it has been and that Serena - my character, has such a bold part in it. It's so different from the way we’ve seen women in action films before. I think all of these things made this experience, for me, truly special.
Tell us about your character, Serena Unger, and how you approached it?
I think my approach was pretty organic. For me, Serena is someone who’s very today, very contemporary. And she’s also very relatable. I remember watching action films when I was a little girl and thinking ‘Why am I watching this movie?’ - because there was nothing to relate to. When I read the script of xXx and saw what an important role Serena plays in the story, first as an individual – strong, confident and intelligent - and then how she works with others to form a team and even lead the group when she needs to… well, I was hooked. She has a lot of fun moments as well and a lot of romantic moments too. I think all of these things make it so, so relatable, especially for women. I think every woman has that strong, heroic voice inside them. I think Serena is the representation of that voice.
It seems like the part was written specifically for you.
In a way, yes. Vin and I had begun working together on another project that didn’t work out due to logistical reasons. But I had such a great experience when I met him, and he remembered me from that when he decided to revive XxX. And so I didn’t have to audition for the role. It just landed in my lap because I was right for the part. Everyone now, of course, is asking me 'how does it feel to represent your country with this film?' I think all of those things are amazing, but as an actress, the most important thing is just to fit the part - and so I think that it’s very, very flattering. Especially that when they decided to write the film, they thought of me first.
What kind of training did you do to prepare for it?
The physical part of it was what I needed to focus on most. The character herself was very relatable, as I said. It was something that was very organic. But the gun-training, the weapons, the knives – those were the things that I needed to work on. I had done an action film in India before - but it didn’t involve any weapons. The minute you have weapons involved, the kind of focus and concentration that’s required is much more intense. And so, to get there, we would rehearse every weekend. We’d film Monday to Friday and then train over the weekend to make sure we’d get it right.
What was it like working with Vin?
I felt very comfortable. I think it helped that I’d met him before and that we had that connection. So when I walked onto the set, I felt like I already knew him. It was not a new relationship that I had to discover. But also there was DJ Caruso. You know, it’s so important to have a director who believes in you and who keeps feeding you that energy and making you believe that whatever you’re doing is beautiful and amazing. At least, I’m that kind of performer. I need my director to keep telling me that I’m doing well because that gives me the confidence to do even more. So my sense of confidence and comfort came from Vin, but a lot of it came from DJ as well. It really came from both of them.
What was the vibe on set like?
Absolutely buzzing. Films will come and go, but it’s the experience that stays with you forever. We became a real family making this movie. And I think everyone really gave their best effort to make the best film possible.
What was it like to be finally filming the action sequences?
There are a couple. First, there’s the one after the grenade sequence where I take down those Russian guys in hand-to-hand combat… I was in so much pain after that day! You know, almost a week after that I still couldn’t move (laughs). The other fun sequence for me was the one with Ruby Rose, where we’re both firing weapons. We had to train consistently to get all the elements right for that because we had to be perfectly in sync with each other. That was another great one for me - in the film it the action takes place in slow motion. It’s an action sequence, but it almost looks like a beautifully choreographed dance scene.
How does your Hollywood experience compare with your Bollywood one?
They’re exactly the same. The same energy, the same love, the same work, the same enthusiasm, the same ups and downs that any film would go through. I don’t know how my life is going to change after this movie releases. I honestly don’t know if any of that is going to be different. But the filming experience for me was the same as it was back home.
Did you have any additional input to your role before the cameras rolled?
I had gone in a couple of weeks before they needed me to start filming and I remember doing this brainstorming session with the writer and with my director. We sat locked up in my room for an entire day, just going through it, scene by scene. She was already a well-written character. But there were certain things that I thought I could add, certain things I could remove, certain feelings or emotions to highlight, which only an actor/actress can do when you step into it, and you ask certain questions. So I went through that entire process with the writer and director, and I think that for me was the most fruitful experience. Because once we had that out of the way, when I started filming, I had no questions. I had no doubts. I knew what I was doing with Serena. I knew where her journey started and where it was going to end.
What was it like watching the finished film for the first time?
My first reaction was that we made such a beautiful movie that’s also entertaining and fun. Obviously, it’s got the adrenaline. But there’s also a socially relevant message there. Sometimes you have films that have a very definitive message, but they’re not very entertaining. And then you have the entertaining films that just leave you feeling nothing. For me, xXx is unique. It has all the action and adventure, and it’s fun. But at the same time, it makes you think. Best of all is how DJ Caruso has blended it all together so seamlessly.
Do you think you might be selected if more films from the franchise are to be made?
Will the franchise continue? I don’t know. I think it’s too soon to tell. I think we first need to share this film with the world before we can think of anything else… right now we’re just focusing on sharing this with the world.

When DeGeneres said: "There is a romance going on, that's what you would get from that as well... Look at that face! Does that mean there is?", Deepika responded: "Well, there is no smoke without fire!"
"But, it's all in my head! So yeah, I mean in my head I think, like yeah, we are together and we have this amazing chemistry, and we live together and we have these amazing babies! But it's all in my head."
The "Bajirao Mastani" actress appeared on the TV show to talk about her Hollywood debut project "xXx: Return of Xander Cage". The film has released in India before the US, and received a mixed response.
The movie is a new instalment in the ‘xXx’ series after the 2002 film ‘xXx’ and the 2005 entertainer ‘xXx: State of the Union’. Directed by DJ Caruso, the film also stars Vin Diesel, Ruby Rose, Samuel L Jackson, Donnie Yen and Tony Jaa.
Deepika also said she wasn't informed that she got the role till the end.
She said: "I actually auditioned for 'Furious 7' about two or three years ago and for whatever reason that didn't work out and I think people remember me for that audition.
“Everyone talks about that chemistry and people remember me from that and then, about a year ago, I get a call from Paramount saying that they are casting for this film and I flew down and met DJ, my director Caruso, and then Vin found out in Los Angeles that I was in Toronto. So overnight, luckily I had a visa, and he said, 'I want her to come and see me'."
"So, overnight I flew down from Toronto to Los Angeles to see Vin and suddenly in the middle of the night we are doing this forty-five minute photo-shoot.”
Deepika was also confused when Diesel made the news of her casting public with a poster.
She said: "He just put it up and I said, I hope you know that if you put up that means I'm doing this movie. He still didn't say anything. He just put it up."
Back in India, Deepika will next be seen in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's "Padmavati".
Hollywood star Vin Diesel, who is in India today to promote his forthcoming film “xXx: Return of Xander Cage”, says visiting the country is a childhood dream come true.
Accompanied by the film’s director D J Caruso and actress Deepika Padukone, who’s making her Hollywood debut with the action-thriller, Vin was given a desi welcome at the airport.
49-year-old Vin took to social media to share his excitement of being in India by posting a picture of himself with co-star Deepika.
“So honoured to be here in India for the first time. The xXx Global tour has been great and now I and @deepikapadukone are going to share this film with her country today,” the actor wrote on Instagram.
“As a child I always dreamed of visiting India… Thank you Paramount for making this dream come true. Xander.”
Vin landed in the morning at Mumbai on Thursday 12th January. Dressed in a blue T-shirt and denims, the actor was welcomed by a group of women wearing Maharashtrian ‘nauvari sari’ at the airport.

British tabloids tag Deepika Padukone as “worst dressed celebrity” at MTV Europe Music Awards
Deepika Padukone's military green look at the MTV Europe Music Awards (EMA) 2016 has been tagged as a “Bollywood blunder” by international publications.
Daily Mail, which had referred to Deepika as the "female companion" of tennis star Novak Djokovic earlier this year, featured the Hindi film star among the 'Worst Dressed Celebs' of MTV EMAs, and tagged her as a “Bollywood Blunder”.
Posting an image of the actress, the publication described the look: "Indian actress Deepika Padukone may be stunning but her swamp green bralet and skirt combo did nothing for her sensational figure."
The Mirror, stated: "Indian film actress Deepika Padukone posed on the red carpet in what looked like a pair of giant dark green curtains as a skirt, a black sparkling bralet and huge chandelier earrings."
Deepika is among the top young stars of Hindi cinema, having proved her mettle on the silver screen with myriad roles in films like ‘Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani’, ‘Chennai Express’, ‘Cocktail’, ‘Bajirao Mastani’ and ‘Piku.
She will be making her Hollywood debut with ‘xXx: Return of Xander Cage’ next year alongside Vin Diesel.
At the event, Deepika's look seemed to be in sync with her fierceful and strong character of "xXx: Return of Xander Cage". She wore a Monisha Jaising ensemble - a skirt with a black, sequin bralette.
Jaising posted Deepika's image on Instagram and captioned it: "Military green is a functional and strong colour. It has a tough, almost androgynous appeal for all of those women warriors out there! Deepika is unstoppable, fit and fierce; making a perfect muse for my Artemisia Gown. I'm thrilled to collaboratively envision with Shaleena Nathani, and create this very special piece for Deepika Padukone for the EMAs."
There's a strong buzz amongst Bollywood lovers about Deepika's Hollywood foray. The trailer of the film was released on Facebook Live and reached 100 million views across multiple platforms in two days.
The film's Facebook engagement started with exclusive teasers being launched via the cast members' own handles to their global fan bases along with exclusive character posters.
Directed by DJ Caruso, ‘xXx: The Return of Xander Cage’ is a sequel to the 2002 film ‘xXx’ and 2005 film ‘xXx: State of the Union’. The film also stars Ruby Rose, Samuel L Jackson, Donnie Yen and Tony Jaa.
A Paramount Pictures movie, it will be exclusively distributed in India by Viacom18 Motion Pictures on January 20, 2017.
Deepika Padukone is the latest Bollywood star to go international and the actress says although she is proud to have bagged 'XXX: The Return of Xander Cage', she is nervous about venturing into a new territory.
The 30-year-old 'Bajirao Mastani' actress will share screen with Hollywood Vin Diesel and Samuel L Jackson in the DJ Caruso-directed action thriller, which is the third installment of the 'XXX' film franchise. Deepika says her ethnicity helped her bag the role and in the film she will be given an opportunity to flaunt her “Indianness”.
"I am very excited. But I want to confess that I am very nervous. Most importantly I feel proud to be a part of a film where I get to flaunt my ethnicity," Deepika told us.
"The reason they are roping me is because of my background. I really hope that I do well in the movie and people go and watch it," said the actress, who was in the capital for the launch of the new collection from luxury Swiss watchmaking company Tissot.
Besides Deepika, another Bollywood actress Priyanka Chopra, who recently made her American TV debut with "Quantico", has reportedly bagged a role in 'Baywatch' movie opposite Dwayne Johnson.
Back home Deepika has been making the right noises and had a tremendous year in 2015 with the success of her films 'Piku', 'Tamasha' and 'Bajirao Mastani'. The actress says it has been her constant effort to keep improving every year and she is happy to see her efforts pay off two years in a row.
"I work to compete with myself and keep setting the benchmark for myself, to keep bettering, says Deepika.
After a successful 2014, I hoped I can do better and then it happened in 2015. It is my constant desire to keep improving," she adds.
With back-to-back film shoots and other commitments, the actress says she hardly gets time off. But despite her busy schedule, Deepika makes sure she reads and also tries her hands at baking.
"I haven't got a weekend for the past three years. But when I do get it, I like to just catch up on sleep. I also love baking and reading. Currently, I am reading the biography on Elizabeth Taylor.”
Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh are one of the most popular couples in Bollywood without a doubt, and their coordinated style is one of the reasons we love “DeepVeer” – as their fans refer to them as.
Both Deepika and Ranveer have been busy promoting ‘Bajrao Mastani’ in style, without Priyanka Chopra who’s got a tight schedule of ‘Quentico’ in the USA.
But we are not at all complaining, why? Because we get to see Deepika and Ranveer doing ‘shaadi poses’ and of course the usual antics.
Looks like Priyanka Chopra, who desires to dominate globally, will have a tough competition from her ‘Bajirao Mastani’ co-star Deepika Padukone very soon. After Priyanka Chopra, who has created waves with her American TV show ‘Quantico’ playing the lead, reportedly Deepika is also set to step her foot in Hollywood. Well, Deepika posted a picture of hers on the social media platforms and triggered speculations that she might soon be seen in Hollywood star Vin Diesel’s next XXX franchise ‘Xander Cage Returns’. In a picture posted by her, she is seen hugging Vin Diesel. The logo of the movie XXX franchise is seen in the backdrop. While she didn’t write much except for Vin Diesel’s name, the visual posted on the social media platforms created a noise all across. If one recalls then Deepika made headlines for being offered a part in ‘Fast and Furious 7’ a while ago years ago. However, it was held that Dippy had turned down the offer citing date issues with Farah Khan’s ‘Happy New Year’. But it seems, after gauging Priyanka’s success and now that she has time available, perhaps, Dippy also wants to try her hand with Hollywood.
Dazzling: Sonam Kapoor gives us a stunning performance in Prem Ratan Dhan Payo
Sonam Kapoor and Deepika Padukone have brought all the trends to the table in their recent interactions promoting their respective films, ‘Prem Ratan Dhan Payo’ and ‘Tamasha’.
For look 1, Deepika wore a Payal Jain off white saree with beautiful embroidery, teaming it up with aquamarine jewelry. Whereas, Sonam looked gorgeous in an Abu Jani and Sandeep creation, her georgette patterned coat was paired with a multi coloured chiffon dress. While Deepika opted for a dark eye look, Sonam wore minimal make up. Both looking perfect as usual.
For look 2, Deepika opted for a casual red shirt dress with Christian Louboutin stilettos and she wore her hair in a simple pony tail with a touch of red lipstick. Sonam, however, wore another Abu Jani couture, but this time she wore a churidar with a colorful dress and minimal makeup. And of course the dupatta has left us swooning for more, these two sure know how to dress to impress, right?
For look 3, Deepika kept her smoky eye look for the Sabyasachi saree, which she paired with some elegant gold jewelry. Sonam dashed up in a Anamika Khanna outfit and what looks hotter than ever is the way her jhumkas complimented her dress.
Both Sonam and Deepika have gone all out to promote their films in stylish, sassy and sophisticated outfits. ‘Prem Ratan Dhan Payo’ is now out in cinemas and ‘Tamasha’ releases on November 27th. In the meantime decide who wore it better!
Queen: Deepika Padukone looks like a dream in a designer Sabyasachi Mukerji outfit
Deepika Padukone inked “RK” on the nape of her neck when her romance with Ranbir Kapoor was at the peak, but now with no love left, it’s been said that the long-legged dusky beauty has got rid of her famous tattoo.
Though it’s not yet clear if Deepika had truly erased the RK tattoo or she has had it photo-shopped or covered up by some concealing aid, her recent advertisement shows no sign of the tattoo.
Deepika had been head over heels in love with the actor but it was Ranbir who cheated on her.
The actress was heartbroken with the break-up and it took time to get out of the trauma. Post break-up with Ranbir, she moved on in life and was also linked with Siddharth Mallya but she concentrated on her career more than any other thing and delivered one hit after another.
She is now said to be dating Ranveer Singh but the actress has not yet made her relationship public and Ranveer claims that they are “just friends”.
However, it was only recently that Ranveer, known famously for partying hard, was spotted kissing Anushka Manchanda at a night club in Mumbai. He’s denied being in a relationship with Deepika.
Ranveer claims if two people hang out together, it doesn’t mean they are couple:
"I think people are jumping the gun. I think it is very presumptuous of people to assume that two people are romantically involved if they are seen going out together. I don't think that is correct judgement," he said.
The actor confessed that he came closer to Deepika during ‘Ram Leela’ shoot.
Ranveer said, “Deepika is somebody I am really close to. She's a professional. I have tremendous amount of respect and admiration for her. Her graph has evolved by such leaps and bounds. It is a free country; I can't stop people from jumping to conclusions. We grew close on a personal level during the filming of Ram Leela and I look forward to working with her in ‘Bajirao Mastani’.”
An American website has announced that Aishwarya Rai-Bachchan has been voted as the 4th “Most Desirable Woman in the World”. Deepika Padukone came in at number 29, out of a total of 30 women.
The survey was based on how people scored female celebrities based on: intelligence, desirability, popularity, attractiveness, beauty and success. The poll drew in some four million people to partake.
