Aagrah’s Mohammed Aslam granted Commission to be a Deputy Lieutenant

The managing director of one of Yorkshire’s most beloved restaurants was this week officially commissioned to be a Deputy Lieutenant for the county.

Aagrah’s Managing Director, Mohammed Aslam MBE was presented with his Lieutenancy Warrant and Badge of Office by the Lord-Lieutenant for West Yorkshire, Dr. Ingrid Roscoe at a Ceremony hosted at Bowcliffe Hall, Bramham.  

The appointment as Deputy Lieutenant is in recognition of his sustained and notable contribution to the county of West Yorkshire, and appeared in the London Gazette prior to the ceremony.

Mr Aslam will assist the Lord Lieutenant for West Yorkshire, Dr. Ingrid Roscoe, who is the Queen’s representative within the county.

Mr Aslam has been at the helm of the successful family business for nearly four decades.

There will be a number of events where the Lord Lieutenant is unavailable and he will attend in her place.

Mr Aslam said: “I will do whatever is required of me. I’m very honoured to be offered this opportunity to further help the community.”

He added: “From a business point of view, we like to support the communities in which we work and this is an opportunity for me to do something further for the people around West Yorkshire.”

Aagrah Restaurant Group was setup by Group Chairman, Mohammed Sabir,MBE, Dbs, in 1977.  

It is an independent family business with 14 sites throughout Yorkshire. The company is the UK and Europe’s largest Kashmiri Restaurant chain.

Mr Aslam has worked with both community and industry initiatives such as schools and colleges to inspire and promote the industry and region.

He also developed the  national South Asian Chef Competition  to recognise  and reward talent from the hospitality sector.    

His passion for food has led to both national and international recognition over the years, with not only one, but two, ‘International UK Chefs of the Year’ awards.

Mohammed Aslam was  also awarded with a Special Recognition accolade at the British Curry Awards 2013 by Prime Minster David Cameron.

The prestigious award acknowledges his significant contributions to services to industry. The 2000 strong audience gave a rapturous standing ovation to Mohammed Aslam in appreciation of his commitment and dedication.

Today, Aagrah Restaurant not only run the restaurant chain, the company also has a highly successful ‘Event Catering’ business providing outdoor catering nationwide ranging from 50 to 5000 people.  

They also have a share of the home dining marketing through a range of Aagrah Tarka Cooking Sauces available in Asda and Coop.

Aagrah also plays host to the biggest event  of its kind,  The Aagrah Business Dinner, in memory of the late Sajid Sabir, son of Aagrah Group Chairman.

Now in its 34thyear, the event is attended by over 800 business guests who collectively generate hundreds of millions of pounds for the economy.

The company employs 400 people and over the years has raised over £2 million pounds for charitable causes.

HONOURED: Mohammed Aslam has been named as the new Deputy Lieutenant for the County of Yorkshire

One of Yorkshire’s most famous restaurateurs will adopt a new uniform later this year after being named as the new Deputy Lieutenant for the County of West Yorkshire.

Managing Director at Aagrah Restaurant Group, Mohammed Aslam, will assist the Lord Lieutenant, Dr Ingrid Roscoe – who represents HM The Queen in the execution of her duties in the County.  

Having spent much of the past four decades in the heat of kitchen, Mr Aslam says he is honoured to have received the position and is looking forward to representing Yorkshire.

“I will do whatever is required of me,” he said. “I’m very honoured to be offered this opportunity to further help the community.”

Mr Aslam, who was previously awarded an MBE by the Queen in 2009, will be expected to attend a number of events where the Lord Lieutenant is unavailable.
