London Marathon conqueror ‘did it for Mum’

A busy mother from Huddersfield completed the gruelling 26-mile course of the London Marathon last weekend and helped raise hundreds of pounds for her chosen charity.

Satpal Sharma, 36, conquered the route in just over four hours as she raised funds on behalf of Arthritis Research UK – a charity which she holds close to her heart.

Spurred on by her mother, who has suffered from osteoarthritis for many years, Satpal crossed the line with her two-year-old daughter, Mia, in her arms.

Despite feeling ‘exhausted’ upon completion, the Huddersfield solicitor said it was all worth it, knowing she had help out such a ‘worthy cause’.

“My mum is my inspiration,” she explained. “She would never be able to do something like the London Marathon because of her condition but she is the most supportive person.

“She is a long time sufferer from osteoarthritis and really inspired me to do the run this year.

“Before the big day, it was all hardcore training and I have to thank all my family for their support as they helped me get through it and get ready to compete.

“My mum would be babysitting as well as my husband who would also help me get all the right carbs and pasta inside me so I was fully ready on the day.”

She added: “I have a very busy life at home but they all supported me 100 per cent.”

Satpal and family
Satpal has completed a number of runs previously ranging from marathons to 10Ks, yet the ‘buzz’ she says she felt this time made it extra special.

“When I was about 100m from the finish line I saw my daughter come out to me from the main stand and I picked her up and we finished the race together,” she said.

“I got a real buzz from the whole day and even beat my time from my last London Marathon by nine minutes.”

So far, Satpal has raised just over £550 through her donations page after registering a time of four hours and 19 minutes.
