A Rochdale footballer with roots in Lancashire’s youth football system has taken a major step in his career after competing at professional level in Pakistan’s national cup competition.
Muhammad Abdur Rahman, 24, a former Burnley FC youth talent, travelled to Karachi to feature in the PFF 2026 National Challenge Cup – one of the country’s most prestigious tournaments, hosted by the Pakistan Football Federation.
Representing Pakistan Railways FC, the defender utilised his Pakistani heritage to take part in the competition, marking a significant milestone in his journey from grassroots football in the North West to the professional stage abroad.

Born and raised in Rochdale, Rahman is a former student of Nelson and Colne College and has steadily built his experience through English non-league football.
Before heading overseas, he played for Coppull United, where he made 38 appearances and scored one goal – earning recognition for his consistency and defensive strength.
Alongside his sporting ambitions, Rahman is also completing a BA (Hons) in Business and Management at the University of Essex, balancing academic success with his progress in the game.

Reflecting on the opportunity, Rahman said: “Being part of such a prestigious event was a privilege. It was a positive experience, and I am looking forward to building on those lessons as I move forward.”
His appearance in the National Challenge Cup highlights the growing pathways available for British Asian footballers seeking to connect heritage with opportunity – and signals an exciting next chapter for a local player making his mark internationally.
