Are you looking to join your spouse working in the UK? Or are you ‘settled in the UK’ and want your spouse to join you?

If you are hoping to bring your spouse to the UK, they must make a Spouse Visa application. They can also either apply as a Fiancé/e or Unmarried Partner of a British citizen or a person with settled status.

A Fiancé/e Visa will only be issued for a six-month period, during which you would be expected to get married. An Unmarried Partner or Spouse Visa is valid for 30 months. After 30 months, they will be able to apply for an extension for a further 30 months. After the five-year period has come to an end, they will be eligible to apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) and later for Citizenship in the UK.

To get a Spouse Visa, they must be married to a British citizen or a person who holds Indefinite Leave to Remain. Besides, they must meet specific requirements:

  • The genuine relationship requirement – you and your partner must demonstrate you are in love and intend to live together permanently.
  • The financial requirements, as you will need proof you can support your family without seeking public funds.
  • The accommodation requirement, to offer your family adequate accommodation to live together in the UK.
  • The English language requirement, meaning you must be able to speak and understand English.

All UK visas, including the UK Spouse Visa, require you to meet a minimum standard of English to be granted entry. Applicants can prove they meet this requirement by taking a Secure English Language Test (SELT).

LanguageCert SELT is a set of UK Home Office approved English tests for UK Visas & Immigration (UKVI) worldwide, covering all visa types. All LanguageCert SELT exams must be taken at approved SELT Centres.
