A City on Edge: Bradford, a city long hailed as a safe haven for people of all faiths and backgrounds, is now facing its own challenges, Humma Nizami warned. “In recent months, we have seen an increase in antisemitism, Islamophobia and racial hatred. Communities feel exposed, vulnerable and fearful due to the rising hostility,” she says.
The Race Equality Network (REN) has tonight issued a powerful statement after the horrific attack at a Manchester synagogue on Yom Kippur, one of the holiest days in the Jewish calendar, which left two worshippers dead and three fighting for their lives.
REN chief executive Humma Nizami described the killings as “cowardly and unacceptable” and warned that communities across Britain must face up to the growing tide of hate threatening to tear society apart.
“Race Equality Network stands in solidarity with the Jewish community not only in Bradford, but across the country,” she declared. “Violence against innocent civilians, especially in places of worship, is utterly abhorrent.
“The whole country is mourning the loss of innocent lives. Our prayers and thoughts are with the victims’ families at this dark time.”
Ms Nizami warned that Bradford, long known as a city of sanctuary, is not immune from division.
“In recent months, we have seen an increase in antisemitism, Islamophobia and racial hatred,” she said.
“Communities feel exposed, vulnerable and fearful due to rising hostility towards people of colour and those of faith.”
She praised Bradford Council’s new Community Cohesion Strategy but demanded urgent action: “This is a prime opportunity for the council to work with REN, faith leaders and grassroots groups to reassure communities and rebuild trust. Our city’s diversity must always be a source of strength, not division.”
In a stark message, Ms Nizami vowed that REN would continue to lead the fight against extremism: “We stand firm in tackling all forms of racism and hate. We will not allow the toxic narratives of division to take hold. Bradford must stand united, and together we can defeat hatred.”
