Lord Patel of Bradford, recently appointed chair of Social Work England, will be at the University of Bradford next month to talk about his vision for the new regulatory body.

He will deliver a lecture, the Future of Social Work England, in the University’s Great Hall on Friday 2nd November 2018 at 10.45am.

The lecture will be followed by a question and answer session.

Social Work England will be a dedicated regulator setting the professional standards for social workers.

Lord Patel is a qualified social worker and worked in inner city Bradford before establishing a number of third sector agencies, working with those misusing drugs and those with mental health problems. These projects included working with drug addicts at the Bridge Project and setting up his own project to work with vulnerable children. He then moved into academia, working with a number of universities.

He has worked at the highest levels of government in a wide range of policy areas impacting on higher education, policy development and service delivery. He has worked with statutory, commercial and third sector organisations, in the UK and abroad, to benefit local communities.

He said: “Supporting and sustaining good social workers requires a strong, confident and effective regulator, so I want Social Work England to not only lead the way in driving up standards, but also to work collaboratively with the profession to ensure that all standards are evidence-based, rooted in real experience and values, and are fit for the 21st Century.”

Robert Strachan, Head of Division, Social Work at the University of Bradford, said: “The University of Bradford Division of Social Work and Social Care is honoured that Lord Patel has chosen to come and talk about Social Work England as it starts to establish itself as the new national regulator for social work. This is a solid endorsement of the hard work and cooperation undertaken by the University, Bradford College, and the local authority in establishing the new and successful teaching partnership for qualifying and newly qualified social workers.”
