Leeds’ answer to gum disease

The British Dental Health Foundation says 80 per cent of the UK population have periodontal disease where the tissue around the teeth becomes inflamed, which can cause shrinking of the gums and loosening of the teeth.

Six million people suffer from the most severe form but for the first time a cure has been developed.

Lead researcher and clinician, Doctor Francesco Martelli says: “Currently periodontal disease is managed rather than treated. Existing methods are ineffective for wiping out the disease and long term treatment often results in the unnecessary removal of teeth.

“We have developed a treatment that can eradicate the pathogens permanently. PERIOBLAST is a breakthrough that gives patients the chance to save their teeth, regenerate bone and ultimately be pain free.”

Deadly Dentist

A grandmother in the US reportedly died after a dentist attempted to extract a large number of teeth at once despite being begged to stop by the client.

64-year-old Judy Gan, a retired librarian from Connecticut, was having 20 teeth extracted together with implant and grafts when she became unresponsive on 17th February.

Just one hour after the appointment she was taken to hospital but died upon arrival.

Dr Rashmi Patel, who owns the dental practice in the Enfield area of the state, is accused of not responding when his patient’s oxygen levels dropped dangerously low and improperly extracting the teeth in a single visit.

He is also alleged to have ignored his two dental assistants’ pleas to call 911 after Ms Gan became unresponsive.

The malpractice was first highlighted after an anonymous tip to the Department of Public Health following Ms Gan’s death, and despite Dr Patel having his license suspended, he still controversially runs two practices in the local area with patients treated by other members of staff.

Dr Gary Pearl, who was asked to review the case by the state's Department of Public Health, wrote in his case review: “It's my belief that (Ms Gan) did not have to die to receive this dental treatment and it is because of…Patel's negligence that she died.”

It is not the first time Dr Patel is believed to have continued working on a patient when they are clearly suffering.

Late last year, a 55-year-old man spent six days in hospital after aspirating a throat pack while under Dr Patel’s care. Dr Patel is accused of failing to stop working during the incident.

The Connecticut State Dental Commission will decide on 18th June whether to revoke Patel's license, suspend it for an additional amount of time or clear him of these charges and reinstate the license.
