Detectives investigating a large-scale incident of disorder at a Leeds community centre, which saw chairs thrown and machetes swung, have this week charged 33 men and a youth with offences.

A total of 52 people were arrested as part of the investigation into the incident at the Bangladesh Centre, in Roundhay Road, Harehills, on Saturday 30th May, in which six people were assaulted and a number of others injured.

Detective Superintendent Pat Twiggs, Head of Crime for Leeds District, said: “As a result of a lengthy and comprehensive investigation and through close liaison with the Crown Prosecution Service’s complex casework unit, we have this week been in a position to bring a total of 56 charges against 34 individuals.

“A total of 32 men and a 17-year-old youth have been charged with violent disorder, 15 of which have also been charged with possession of an offensive weapon along with a further man.

“Four of the men have also been charged with assaults, including a Section 18 wounding and an attempted Section 18 wounding. One man has also been charged with witness intimidation.”

Windows and doors were smashed during the mass brawl after opposing groups reportedly clashed prior to a committee election.

Police vowed to take action following the incident, utilising personal videos posted online as well as the attending officer’s body-worn camera footage.

“Of the 52 arrested, 16 were released without charge and one man received a caution and another  community resolution,” Detective Superintendent Twiggs added.

“The 34 have been charged after attending Leeds District Headquarters over the last three days. They are due to appear at Leeds Magistrates Court on 6th April and 8th April.”
