Two local restaurants in Leeds have been named within the ‘Top 16’ of the country by a prestigious Curry Guide.
Hansa’s Vegetarian restaurant, on North Street, Leeds, and Azram’s Sheesh Mahal, on Kirkstall Road, were both recognised by Pat Chapman’s Cobra Good Curry Guide for their outstanding food and service.
Azram’s has been in the heart of Leeds for more than 20 years and has seen thousands of customers pass through the doors.
On Tuesday 2nd December it was awarded the ‘Best West Yorkshire Restaurant’ accolade in front of invited guests, including customers from the 20plus group - diners who have been visiting the restaurant for more than two decades.
Azram Chaudhry, owner of Azram’s Sheesh Mahal, said he was ‘happy’ to receive the award but insists there is more to life than ‘a piece of paper’.
“A piece of paper is a simple way to say we love you and your food,” he said. “Of course it is nice to know you are doing something right in the eyes of others but for me it is all about my diners.
“They are my extended family and there is nothing more that I cherish.”
Hansa’s Gujarati restaurant also scooped a top award for the ‘Best Indian Vegetarian Restaurant in the UK’.
A similar presentation event was held at the establishment on Wednesday 3rd December, during the day, whilst an evening reception was also staged with more than 100 attendees.
Speaking after receiving the award, owner, Hansa Dabhi said: “Being nominated the Best Indian Vegetarian Restaurants in the UK is the icing on top of my Christmas Cake.
“To receive such an accolade from such a prestigious food guide is what every restaurateur dreams of.”
Pat Chapman, founder of the Good Curry Guide, explained what it meant for a restaurant to receive such an award and praised both dining hotspots for their ‘fantastic setups’.
“I have been doing this guide since 1984 yet it is the public’s opinions and reviews which ultimately decide who the top restaurants are,” Mr Chapman said.
“For both Azram’s and Hansa’s to be included in the Top 16 in the country is not only great for them but also the city.
“It is great to be giving these awards to the two deserved recipients.”
