Event Commander, Chief Superintendent Stuart Ellison, said: “This Sunday (4 June 2017) Trafford will host more than 130,000 people as Greater Manchester pays tribute to those who tragically lost their lives in the attack on the Manchester Arena.

“Two large-scale events will be taking place less than a mile away from each other – Manchester’s One Love concert at Emirates Old Trafford, the home of Lancashire County Cricket Club and Michael Carrick’s testimonial at Old Trafford football ground.

“This means there will be a lot of people in the area all trying to enter or leave two stadiums and the safety of the public, inside and outside, is paramount to our policing operation.

“As part of this, we have been working extensively with the staff and security teams, as well as Trafford Council and Transport for Greater Manchester.

“We have dedicated resources, with a significant number of officers from both GMP and colleagues from other forces, some of which will be armed.

“These officers will be spread around the approaching streets, Metrolink stations and at the stadiums themselves.

“There will also be additional security checks taking place. Everyone will be searched and this includes bags. We would ask people not to bring bags if they can as this will help speed up entry.

“We know this can be frustrating for people but we also know you understand the importance of these checks, so please be patient with staff and officers.

“The last two weeks have been difficult for our communities, officers and staff, and our thoughts remain with all those affected by the abhorrent attack on Monday 22 May 2017.

“This is a time for the people of Greater Manchester, and further afield, to come together and show we are united.

“Whilst we want you to enjoy yourself, we also want people to be remain vigilant.
