Bankside’s brainy bakers

Pupils at Bankside Primary School in Leeds have been donning their chefs’ hats, rolling up their sleeves and reaching for their wooden spoons for a second year of their uber-successful Bake Off competition.

All manner of tasty goods were cooked up, from scrumptious ‘Pizza Wheels’ that contain (to quote the children) ‘happiness in every bite’ to ‘heavenly, mouth-watering and gooey’ chocolate brownies that were ‘made with love by the children of Bankside’.

Judging the competition were two bakers from Betty’s & Taylors of Harrogate, Joanne Baron and Amanda Shackell, who were ‘bowled over’ by the talent displayed by the budding bakers.

Speaking to over 700 children at the ‘special awards assembly’ where the winners were announced, Joanne said: “Well done to everyone. It was a very hard decision to pick the winners. You have all created some lovely posters and the cakes look absolutely delicious.”

Mr Salik Miah, Enrichment Teacher at the school said: “Throughout the two weeks of Bake Off, the skills that the children have learnt have been invaluable.

“They have been looking at recipes, which involves learning how to write and follow instructions.

“Pupils have been honing their persuasive writing skills by looking at adverts and understanding how to entice people to buy their product using words and pictures.

“Their maths skills have been improved from the budgeting of the cakes and figuring out how much things cost.

“The curriculum also suggests that we should get the children to learn about locally sourced produce. It’s all about being healthy.

“It covers the literacy side of things, and the maths with the weighing and adding of ingredients and even science when looking at temperatures.”

The winning bakers have been invited to Betty’s Tea Rooms in Ilkley for afternoon tea cakes and hot chocolates if they decide as part of their prize.

12 other children will go to a cupcake master class and decorate the treats with professionals.

The whole school gets to enjoy the third prize where a film will be shown and popcorn handed out.
