‘Join our team and make a difference’

Year after year, thousands of dedicated fundraisers lace up their running shoes and take to the streets of Leeds to complete the challenging Half Marathon and this year it could be you crossing the finish line.

Open to runners of all abilities, the annual event is set to be staged in May this year and will see thousands pass through the famous Leeds streets, raising money for hundreds of causes.

One such cause is the Imran Khan Cancer Appeal (IKCA). For the past five years, the charity has been represented by a team of at least eight runners, helping to raise between £3,000 and £4,000 each race.

However, this year, with the date fast approaching, Team IKCA is still searching for more volunteers to help raise vital funds for the fight against cancer.

Tariq Qadeer has completed the route for the past six years, representing the charity on the previous five, and appeals for more team members to step forward and help raise money for the worthy cause.

“We are looking for volunteers, both men and women, to join our team and help raise money for the Imran Khan Cancer Appeal,” he said.

“The last date to register for the Leeds Half Marathon is towards the end of March but this race is a ‘Sell Out’ every year so it is important to register as soon as possible.

“Anyone who goes out for a bit of jogging, running, walking, or would like to get fit or do something special for a great cause, then please email us as soon as possible and we would be extremely grateful.”

The team is not made up of professional runners, with many just training in the two months prior to the call of ‘on your marks’ yet every year thousands are raised for charity.

Explaining why the run is not only crucial in raising funds, but also rewarding for the entrants, Tariq added: “Every year, we all manage to finish in less than three hours which may not be quick but at least we all complete the race.

“Despite the hard work and all the aches and pains over the next few days, most of us keep coming back every year as it is one of the best experiences you can have.”
