Zesh shocked by Bradford axe
Defender transfer listed after club disciplinary sours visit to Downing Street

INVITED: Pakistan international Zesh Rehman meeting Prime Minister David Cameron

Bradford City defender Zesh Rehman has expressed his surprise and disappointment at being stripped of the club’s captaincy and being placed on the transfer list.
The club stated the defender will be available on a free transfer when the transfer window re-opens at the start of January 2011.
They also stated that the decision was taken due to a club disciplinary matter.
While being questioned on BBC radio, Zesh spoke of his frustration whilst watching his side struggle when he felt his experience could help.
It would appear that Bradford City manager Peter Taylor has taken the broadcast out of context or there has been some kind of misunderstanding, as the reported disciplinary action seems very severe for a player renowned as a role model to youngsters and a model professional.
Despite being transfer listed, Zesh remains fully committed to Bradford while contracted to the club and has no qualms playing under Taylor when he is called upon for first-team duty again.
Zesh said: “I’m at the club and will continue to give 100% when called upon as always.
“I’ve worked 24/7 on and off the pitch for the club, as I have done for every club I’ve been at.  The fans have been good to me since I've been here and I really appreciate their continued support.
“I’m aware of how quickly things can change in this game and you can never say never. I have played in all four leagues and have always received praise for my professionalism, work ethic and attitude.”
HONOUR
Meanwhile, Zesh has spoken of his honour at receiving a personal invitation to Number 10 Downing Street.
Zesh was a guest at a private reception held by Prime Minister David Cameron at Downing Street.
In a speech at the reception, the Prime Minister said he wanted to “celebrate the immense contributions” British Asians like Zesh have made to this country.
Speaking before being transfer listed, the defender said: “This is a distinguished moment for not only for me as club captain, but also an incredible honour for Bradford FC and the City of Bradford.  Together we have achieved positive recognition on a national scale.”
Being the first ever Asian captain of Bradford City, Zesh stood among other British Asians who have contributed to the rich landscape of British society.
While at the event, Zesh was quizzed by both David Cameron and Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg on his achievements.
Zesh said: “Being one of only two British Asians playing professional football, I was happy to speak to both David Cameron and Nick Clegg about my career and some of the racial hurdles and barriers that I have overcome to make the grade.  The PM also commented on monitoring my progress for a number of years and said he remembered me from my Premiership and Championship days with Fulham and QPR.
“They were both also very supportive of the foundation I launched in May and believe it will achieve its aims of bridging the cultural gap in our society through the power of football.”
