Renowned celebrity make-up artist Naeem Khan is the first Asian male to open up a make-up training academy up north.
Naeem has worked in the Pakistani film industry and on photo shoots and catwalks.
He has also worked on numerous high profile counters such as Urban Decay, Christian Dior and Chanel and felt that it was important to open up an academy which gave students an in-depth training similar to his own.
With a background in fashion and the fine arts he said: “It is important for any make-up artist to be artistic and creative and this is what the course offers.
“At my academy the students are asked to create collages and mood boards to show their research and dress up mannequins so they can get the full experience of dressing up a bride or a model with make-up.”
Student Nadia Miah said: “It’s ace for beginners - you come in not knowing anything, and you walk out a pro.”
However, in addition to this Naeem still offers traditional training in bridal, party, glamour, fashion, Arabic and Bollywood make-up, as well as offering specialist training in photographic make-up.
The six-day course began in January this year and Naeem has made a point to stick to only teaching three people at a time. He said: “I want to offer a one-to-one intense course and by taking in only three students at a time I can focus on them as individuals.”
Naeem calls all of his ex-students back after four weeks of completing the training to see how well they are doing, and the lucky individuals also get the chance to shadow him with his own work, whether it be working with a bride, or for a photo shoot.
Costing £1,200, the six-day training scheme includes a portfolio of work in addition to extra pictures taken on shoots. And of course the students get the opportunity of the life-time by shadowing a celebrity make-up artist.
Individual growth is important for Naeem and he said: “I want to be able to give people the confidence you need to work in this industry. For me it is such an important job and I always say to my students treat your models and brides like a blank canvas which you apply paint on – it’s a form of art.”
