The England U19’s team for their trip to Sri Lanka includes promising future stars Ateeq Javid and Gurman Randhawa.
Warwickshire County Cricket Club’s (WCCC) Ateeq Javid, from Birmingham, only played four first class games this year but that was due to his inclusion in the England U19’s tour of Bangladesh during the season.
Ateeq is more experienced then some of the players selected for the tour of Sri Lanka but believes the squad has a good mixture.
It will be a great experience for us and I’m sure the tour will improve our game,” said Ateeq. “We have a few inexperienced players, but we are going to be working together for a couple of weeks before we fly out to Sri Lanka. It’s going to be hardwork over there but hopefully the training sessions beforehand will leave us in good stead.
“I’ve been to Bangladesh and I’ve spoken to a few people who have been to Sri Lanka before and they said that the playing conditions are quite similar. The heat is one of the conditions we have to deal with but it’s a part of playing international cricket.”
Yorkshire County Cricket Club’s (YCCC) Gurman Randhawa has also been rewarded for his impressive displays in the clubs academy with a call up.
The 18-year-old from Huddersfield has yet to make an appearance for Yorkshire’s first team but has impressed personnel at the club.
Randhawa, who is a left-arm spin bowler, was named YCCC Academy Player of the Year in 2009 and 2010.
The young cricketer has recently pledged his future to the YCCC by signing his first professional contract with the club.
Tim Boon, England Development Programme head coach, said: “We have selected a balanced squad with a combination of players with U19 and first class experience as well as younger players. This tour provides an excellent opportunity for the players to test themselves in different conditions and against tough opposition and develop many of the skills needed to thrive in international cricket.”
