Asian man becomes one of the first to study for new McDonald’s qualification
SUCCESS: Uxbridge McDonald’s general manager Bharpur Singh

McDonald’s general manager in Uxbridge has become one of the first people in the UK to have the opportunity to study for a McDonald’s Foundation Degree in Managing Business Operations.
Bharpur Singh, 35, is one of a handful of McDonald’s restaurant managers to sign up for the qualification, which was launched across the country on November 25.
Bharpur, a General Manager for McDonald’s in Uxbridge, began the Foundation Degree in September and said: “I did a Masters in Multimedia and Computing before I joined McDonald’s so I thought the Foundation Degree would be easy in comparison, but it was much harder than I expected.
“Learning more about the business is a win-win situation as my analysing skills have improved and the business acumen I’m gaining means I can put more back into the company. It’s accessible too because you don’t have to take time off as it fits in with your working life.”
The Foundation Degree, which offers a mixture of academic study and on the job training, is another step forward in terms of qualifications McDonald’s now offers.
The McDonald’s prospectus showcases the full learning ladder of opportunities available to staff which ranges from NVQs in Maths and English to the Level 2 Apprenticeship in Hospitality, and now the new Foundation Degree.
Chief People Officer, McDonald’s UK & Northern Europe, David Fairhurst said: “At McDonald’s we provide a learning ladder that our people can ascend while they work. There’s no longer a need to choose between education and employment – people want to study at a stage in their life when it’s convenient for them.”
