World Curry Festival 2014, A celebration of all things curry!
Bradford was treated to three days of irresistible flavours and tastes last weekend as the World Curry Festival arrived in Britain’s official Curry Capital.
Now in its fifth year, the event continues to draw in top chefs from around the world with visitors getting the chance to experience the international curry trail on Yorkshire’s own doorstep.
With more demonstrations and delectable dishes than ever before, there was something for everyone to enjoy, from the curry theatre to pop-up restaurants and the return of the now renowned ‘chapatti challenge’.
New this year was the World Curry Festival Cooking School which also gave visitors the chance to prepare dishes alongside top chefs in a separate marquee.
Jamaica, Malaysia, America, India and Pakistan were just some of the nations represented at the global event which continued to expand into new territories.
Zulfi Karim, the festival’s founder, said his main aim was to get people together to talk over food and was delighted with the success of this year’s event.
“We’ve really now taken the festival to an international level and it continues to attract chefs from wider afield,” he said.
“Here at the World Curry Festival, our aim and mission is all centred on gastro diplomacy. We get people together around food to talk and that’s really where we are going.
“You have seen over the past three days, our audience is so multi-cultural and it is bringing all these people together over one common element - a love for food.
“It’s been a fantastic weekend, the weather has been brilliant and I just want to say a big thank you to all those that have supported us, those who come along every year and help make the festival bigger and better.”
US Ambassador to the UK, Matthew Barzun, officially opened the three-day event last Friday as he performed a live cooking exhibition of his Grandmother’s recipe - ‘Mother's Curry Sauce’.
It is the first time that the Ambassador has visited Bradford and, alongside Anita Jaisinghani, the pair represented the US at this year’s World Curry Festival.
“Anita came all the way from Texas which shows that we’ve begun following the curry trail even further around the world,” Mr Karim added.
“She was absolutely amazing and it was for that reason that we got in contact with the American Embassy and the Ambassador to the UK.”
He added: “I ended up spending about two and a half hours with Matthew Barzun and what a gentleman he was.
“He tried the curries, he had a go at cooking and was very interested in food, very interested in culture and very interested in the wider community.”
Alongside the spice spectacular, Poetry in the City, in collaboration with the Ilkley Literature Festival, was also staged providing a feast of poetry for writers of all ages.
