A drunk passenger on a Virgin Australia plane was arrested at Bali airport after triggering a hijack alert when he attempted to enter the cockpit, airline and Indonesian officials said on Friday.

National police spokesman Suhardi Alius said the passenger, named as Matt Lockley, had been arrested over the incident after he allegedly hammered at the cockpit door forcing the pilot to send a mayday message.

“This is no hijacking, this is a miscommunication,” said Heru Sudjatmiko, a Virgin Australia official on the Indonesian resort island. “What happened was there was a drunk person... too much alcohol consumption caused him to act aggressively.

“There was a drunk passenger, intoxicated and aggressively behaved. He was trying to enter the cockpit, banging the door but he did not enter the cockpit.”

Lockley was detained by crew members on-board the plane before being arrested when the jet touched down at the Indonesian island's Denpasar airport.

The airport was closed briefly but flights resumed shortly after the incident.
